Matthias Jaissle unruffled by Crystal Palace manager sack talk as Newcastle look for response

Eagles boss Pierre Sage is under pressure heading into today's game with Newcastle

Newcastle United head coach Matthias Jaissle insists he has been unmoved by talk of pressure growing on Crystal Palace Pierre Sage ahead of pressure building on the Eagles boss.

The Magpies head to Selhurst Park this afternoon looking to get back to winning ways after a bruising week which saw them lose 4-1 at Coventry and 1-0 at home to Aston Villa.

The manner of those defeats increased scrutiny on Jaissle's tactical set-up and the performances of his team so far this season, but there is no such threat on his job as is potentially facing Sage.

Sage cast doubt over his future as Eagles boss after they were thrashed 5-0 by fierce rivals Brighton and Hove Albion last Sunday to pile huge pressure on the former Lens head coach after an indifferent start to life in South London.

Palace have picked up seven points from their opening seven Premier League matches and will head into this weekend's clash with the Magpies one point behind their opponents.

But after such a damaging defeat at the AMEX Stadium, the heat has been turned up on Sage and when asked if he believes he will still be in charge to turn Palace's fortunes around, Sage said: "I don’t know.”

He went on to offer an apology to the fans, adding: "We are not at the level we expected, and I’m really sorry for that. I just want to apologise to the fans because it’s not normal to show this face.

"I cannot blame anybody because we didn’t do the job in a good way. I’m responsible for this team, and when the team play as today, it’s not normal. It’s my fault. I understand them.

"The first work to do is on me. I’m responsible for what’s happened on the pitch, and I have a lot of work to do because I have to change this kind of thing.

"It’s maybe in the preparation, in the way we give them the motivation to start the game just before in the locker room in the warm-up.

"We have to analyse that because it’s not normal. And today it was really at the highest level we cannot expect, and that’s the moment to change the thing."

Since then, Palace bounced back to record an impressive 2-2 draw away at Besiktas in the Europa League and when asked if Jaissle will use Palace's situation to Newcastle's advantage, he chose to focus on what he can control internally as opposed to any external facotrs.

"I am way too far away to judge the situation there," Jaissle told Chronicle Live. "We just focus on what we have here right now and what we can do, what we can influence coming out of that period and that is a lot at the moment.

"So it will be good if we are doing that and if we just focus on our things. I am really optimistic now, as I saw the lads during the week, to show a great performance."
