Kevin O'Sullivan talks Florida after Ontario Blue Jays exhibition win

Florida baseball coach Kevin O'Sullivan is getting a clearer picture of what his roster could look like as the games begin to count.

The Gators continued their unbeaten fall exhibition schedule Wednesday with a 7-4 win over the Ontario Blue Jays, with Nic Partridge delivering a three-hit night and Florida's bullpen stringing together seven consecutive scoreless innings. The performance gave O'Sullivan another opportunity to move players around defensively and evaluate a pitching staff that he believes has made significant progress.

O'Sullivan spoke with the press immediately following the exhibition about Partridge's breakout fall, Florida's defensive versatility, its emerging bullpen options and the development of several young pitchers.

Here's everything O'Sullivan had to say, with quotes transcribed from Gators Online's YouTube coverage.

On the overall performance

I think they all did. Honestly, I think Brady (Snow)'s back was bothering him just a little bit, and I think he kind of tweaked something and didn't say anything. So I thought he threw good. I thought they all threw good.

We had a little miscue there on the 4-1 there in the ninth. It was our first error that we made all fall long. Then, obviously, Partridge had a really big night at the plate. Went 3-for-4, really tough at-bats. So, yeah, really pleased with how the freshmen played.

What have you seen from Nic Partridge during fall ball?

He's had a really good fall. I can't say enough good things about him, honestly.

We've played him all over the place. We've got to try to find a place to play him. That's the first time he's played first base all fall long, and we just really started doing reps this week with him over there.

But we've got to find a place for him, obviously, whether it be at first or somewhere in the outfield. He's had a really outstanding fall.

How did Partridge look at first base?

Good for the first time. He's only been out there — Wednesday, we've only been working with him a couple of days over there.

But he's a middle infielder, so the transition shouldn't be too difficult. He's had a really outstanding fall.

What is Partridge doing differently from last year?

He just had some stuff he was dealing with last year. But I always knew he could hit.

In high school, he was one of the higher-profile guys in Florida coming out. He's got great bat-to-ball skills, and he's developing into some power. Yeah, he should be a huge factor for us this year.

Did you challenge Partridge to add more muscle?

No, he's just put some work in in the weight room, obviously. Yeah, he's put on probably 30 pounds from last year.

What have you thought of Florida's defense this fall?

It's been really good. It's been really good. I'm really pleased with it. I think that's the one part of the game — that and maybe baserunning — teams overlook sometimes. But we've been playing really clean baseball on that side, for sure.

How has Braylen Montgomery looked this fall?

He's growing into his own. You can see that he's got a lot of things to learn still, but the physicality and the way he runs — he's just a special athlete, bottom line.

What was the trip to Pensacola and the win over Troy like?

Not, really (exorcising any demons there). I'd rather have played better last spring.

I really enjoyed it. The people in Pensacola were outstanding. We had over 4,000 people, and it gives all the Gator fans in the Panhandle a chance to see us play.

What did you learn about the depth of this team?

I think tonight what I saw was we've got some depth and we've got some versatility, moving a bunch of guys around defensively.

It's one of those things you try to prepare for. Just in case this guy gets hurt, who's going to replace him? You're always trying to think ahead a little bit in those situations.

But, yeah, I think the depth and versatility are going to be one of the biggest advantages that we probably have on our club.

How has Colin White made the jump from high school to college?

That's the best he's thrown all fall. You look out there and Brady Snow is 94, 95, and the last three guys were 94-96.

Ethan Wheeler comes in and does nothing but throw strikes, strikes out five in 2 and 1/3 innings. I think we struck out 18 and only walked two.

I know the team we're playing is younger, but extremely well coached. Their pitchers throw strikes, and we're throwing the ball up there in the mid-90s. They're ready to hit fastballs.

It was a really good night for everybody.

Where are things with finding bullpen and closing options?

It's starting to come together. We've got a couple more weeks left, but there's a couple guys that are starting to emerge.

But then we've got to figure out who's going to start, too. So far, the pitching has just really, really improved since last year. I'm pleased with the depth, and obviously you can see the talent. It's just a matter of executing in the spring.

Which pitchers are beginning to emerge?

Obviously, you've got Caden McDonald, and there's just some other guys. We've got so many options right now.

It really comes down to who's going to be able to handle the moment when the spring rolls around.

How has Joshua Whritenour looked?

His last two outings, he's been outstanding.

Rich Dorman made a slight adjustment in his delivery. He was getting a little deep on his backside, and he's kind of leveled out his shoulders a little bit and developed a real, true curveball. The last two outings are the best he's looked.

Another guy who's made a huge, huge step is Schuyler Sandford. He looked unbelievable the other day. I'm pleased with where we're at. But obviously it's the fall, and when the lights go on in the spring, sometimes for some guys it's a little different.

But so far, so good. I'm really pleased with where we're at.

How has Rich Dorman helped the young pitchers develop?

I think Rich is doing an outstanding job. I think all of our coaches are, honestly.

I think Rich has done an unbelievable job with the pitchers. I think Todd's done an unbelievable job with the infielders and the defensive part, and I think Tommy's doing a great job with the hitters.

We've got Mikey and Michael Byrne and Nick helping us out there, our first-base coach. For me, it's a really good group.

I think you can kind of see the calmness in the players and see some rapid improvement on both sides — on the pitching side and the offensive side and, obviously, the defensive side as well.

What do you want to see over the final two fall games?

Just keep doing what we're doing.

I hope the weather isn't what it predicts right now with the rain on Sunday, but we'll play two six-inning games, I think, on Sunday starting at 2 against Mercer.

Like I said, hopefully the weather is going to be good enough for us to get out here.
