WEYMOUTH claimed another scalp to higher league opposition as they sunk Sholing 3-2 at wet and windy Bob Lucas Stadium as Sholing missed an injury time penalty.
Mitch Beardmore opened the scoring with a superb free kick from 20 yards which nestled into the top corner before Tor Swann rolled in a second just after half an hour.
Ex-Terras Jake McCarthy pulled one back in the 37th minute but Weymouth deserved their lead at half-time.
After the break Toby Holmes poked home from a corner but Jahiem Dotse came off the bench to bring it back to 3-2.
Weymouth dominated the game after that and had plenty of chances to wrap it up but the fourth goal never came.
Sholing were then awarded a penalty deep into stoppage time but McCarthy smashed the ball onto the bar as the home fans went wild.
A brilliant performance in wet and windy conditions nonetheless and the scoreline flattered the visitors.
Weymouth made one change from the side that beat Bristol Manor Farm in midweek.
Wes Fogden returned to make his first start since returning from injury as Will Keita dropped to the bench.
Skipper Tom Bearwish was back in the squad and was named among the substitutes. Brooklyn Genesini, Matt Neale and Kieran Douglas all missed out through injury.
Former Terras midfielder Jake McCarthy returned to the Bob Lucas Stadium and started for Sholing.
He was one of two changes for Ross White's side after a 1-1 draw with Yate Town in midweek as Tommy Willard came in as well.
Dan Mason dropped to the bench and Joey Jones was absent from the match day squad.
Despite the howling wind and stinging rain it was a good start to the game as first Weymouth probed first with Tor Swann and Wes Fogden seeing shots blocked in the opening minute.
Sholing themselves had early spells of possession and saw strikes from Olly Pendlebury and Tommy-Lee Higgs go wide of Gerard Benfield's post.
Toby Holmes had a one-on-one with Jack Turner but was denied by the SHoling keeper who had done well to deny the Terras frontman.
Then, after 17 minutes, Weymouth took a deserved lead after their positive start to the game.
Wes Fogden was fouled around 20 yards out and Beardmore stepped to wrap his foot around the ball and send the resulting free kick into the top corner - a superb strike form the Terras number 10.
Swann doubled the hosts lead just after the half hour mark as he finished first time from Holmes' cross.
Holmes did well to win the ball off left back Thabo Kuaho high up the pitch before rolling the ball across for his strike partner.
Whilst Weymouth deserved their lead Sholing remained a threat and pressed for a way back into the game.
Benfield produced a brilliant save from a Tommy Willard header as the Sholing number 10 headed towards goal from close range after a corner.
But from the resulting corner the ball was allowed to fall to McCarthy who fired in a thunderbolt of a strike from 10 yards to make it 2-1 in the 37th minute to half the deficit before half-time.
Weymouth should have restored their 2-0 goal cushion soon after the restart.
A wonderful flowing move involving Bearwish and Holmes saw Swann with the task of slotting the ball pass Turner, but somehow the Terras winger dragged his shot wide of the far post.
A minute later another successful Terras press - which had been effective all game - allowed Swann to drive forward but Turner came out and the ball squirmed across the six-yard box, Holmes too far away to turn the ball home.
It didn't take long for Weymouth get their third as Holmes poked home from a corner to restore his side's two-goal lead.
But Sholing were not ready to give up yet and despite barely making it into Weymouth's half, substitute Dotse was slipped in and rolled the ball under Benfield to bring the score to 3-2.
As the game entered the final 10 minutes Weymouth were incontrol and plenty of chances fell to Holmes, Bearwish and Hutchinson as they pushed for a fourth to seal the tie.
It wouldn't come and Sholing were gifted a chance to take the game to penalties as Benfield brought down Dan Mason in the box.
But McCarthy sent the ball crashing back off the bar with the final kick as the home crowds roared their team on as the final whistle was blown.
Weymouth go into the hat for monday's second round draw.
Next up is a trip to Shaftesbury on Tuesday night as league action resumes.
