TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Southern thwarted Florida A&M 42-14 on Saturday at Bragg Memorial Stadium. Here are three takeaways from the game:
Southern has been a part of blowouts but rarely as the victors. The control Southern had throughout this game was a new feeling and one that the team wasn’t going to relinquish. The Jaguars washed the bad taste of losing a winnable game against Texas Southern with a season-defining victory that keeps them in the hunt for the SWAC West crown. The Jaguars should feel proud of themselves for not letting a previous loss carry over, as they outclassed another hungry team.
The Jaguars star running back’s awesome season continues. Holly played like a man possessed. He made the most of practically every carry afforded to him. It was rare for him not to get positive yardage when he was given a touch. Holly, a 5-foot-7, 192-pound bowling ball of a tailback, pounded FAMU as he has done against almost every opponent Southern has faced. It’s satisfying to see his talent and an improved offensive line lead to a team win.
Southern’s stellar rushing attack will be how most will remember the game. What shouldn’t be ignored was the tenacity of its defense. While FAMU has struggled to beat teams, it has often put up high-scoring numbers in its pass-happy offense. The Rattlers' 14 points were the second-fewest against an FCS opponent. Southern kept points off the board by being excellent at the line of scrimmage and disruptive in the secondary, picking off two passes.
