AS Monaco had got off to a flying start in Ligue 1. However, over the past few weeks, the machine seems to have hit a bit of a snag. Whilst the side, currently third in the table, recorded their second consecutive victory in the Conference League on Thursday against SC Freiburg (3-0), their league form has been on the wane.

Held to a draw by Toulouse FC (2-2) a fortnight ago, Filipe Luís’s side suffered their first defeat of the season away to FC Lorient (1-0) last weekend. Yesterday, against LOSC Lille (1-1), their latest draw extended their run to three matches without a win in Ligue 1.

This situation is raising the first questions about ASM’s Brazilian manager, according to L’Équipe. This is particularly true given his approach to managing his squad, especially in attack. Having established himself as a first-team regular at the forefront of the Monegasque attack, Paris Brunner (20) is shining. But it has to be said that his efforts alone cannot carry his team to victory in every match.

This is why the limited playing time given to Mika Biereth (23) – 57 minutes in Ligue 1 this season – Folarin Balogun (25) – 71 minutes played – and the €30m signing Matthis Abline (23) – three starts in seven matches – begs questioning. A management approach that some find baffling, given that the value of the squad on the bench is estimated at €75m.
