Steven Gerrard ‘candidate for ambitious Championship job’ with owners considering change after poor start to season

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson is under huge pressure to turn things around

Wrexham sit 18th in the table after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Sheffield United on Friday, leaving them eight points adrift of the play-off places and just five clear of the relegation zone.

According to talkSPORT, ambitious Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are considering their options after setting their sights on promotion to the Premier League this season.

However, any decision to part company with Parkinson would be a difficult one given his remarkable achievements since taking charge in 2021.

The 58-year-old has guided Wrexham from the National League to the Championship, overseeing three consecutive promotions and transforming the club’s fortunes.

His success has earned him enormous respect from Reynolds and McElhenney, who are understood to have effectively promised him a job for life.

But the arrival of sporting director Steve Nickson has brought a fresh perspective, with chief executive Michael Williamson and director Shaun Harvey also expected to have a say in any managerial decision.

Back-to-back defeats against Blackburn and Sheffield United have increased concerns behind the scenes, with the club now reportedly drawing up contingency plans.

Gerrard, 46, is understood to be interested in the role and could be considered should Wrexham decide a change is necessary.

The former England midfielder previously managed Rangers and Aston Villa before taking charge of Saudi Arabian outfit Al-Ettifaq, where he left his position in January 2025.

Former Luton and Middlesbrough boss Rob Edwards, Steve Cooper and Carlos Corberan have also reportedly been discussed as possible replacements.
