Roland Nixon and Gary Burke win Western Zone over-55's title

With a strong field of experienced bowlers competing for the opportunity to represent the Western Zone at the National Championships in 2027, the competition produced a number of closely contested encounters before the eventual winners were crowned.

The opening rounds saw several familiar names progress to the semi finals, including William Harpur of Devenish, Gary Burke of Wellington, Trevor Morrison of Wellington and Charlie Armstrong of Christchurch.

In the first semi-final, Harpur faced Burke and Nixon in an encounter that proved particularly competitive. Burke made the stronger start, establishing an 8-1 advantage after five ends. However, Harpur mounted an impressive comeback, collecting five shots over the following three ends to reduce the deficit to just two. Burke held his nerve on the final end, adding a single shot to secure a 9-6 victory and his place in the final.

The second semi-final saw the pairing of Trevor Morrison and Alan Browne take on Charlie Armstrong's pairing in another closely fought contest. Morrison edged ahead in the early stages before Armstrong responded with a three on the fourth end to move 4-2 in front. Morrison then produced a decisive spell, collecting three shots on the sixth end and another three on the seventh to establish a 9-4 advantage. Armstrong claimed two on the penultimate end, but it wasn't enough to stop Morrison and Browne progressing to the final.

The final brought together the two experienced Wellington pairs, skipped by Burke and Morrison, with both pairs having demonstrated their quality throughout the evening.

Burke's pairing made an excellent start, collecting two shots on the opening end before adding another on the second to establish an early 3-0 lead.

Morrison responded with singles on the third and fourth ends to narrow the deficit to 3-2, but Burke regained control with a crucial three on the fifth end, extending the advantage to 6-2.

Further scores of two on the sixth end and one on the seventh put Burke firmly in command at 9–2. Morrison and Browne fought back, but despite their best efforts Burke and Nixon secured their victory in the last end and claim the Western Zone Over-55s Pairs title for the 2026/27 season.

Congratulations to Roly Nixon and Gary Burke on their success, who will now hope that at the National Championships in 2027 that they can build on their impressive qualifying performance.
