Eddie Howe told to take Man United job on one huge condition

Eddie Howe has been told to 'stay clear' of the Manchester United job unless one request is met.

The former Newcastle boss is among the contenders to succeed Michael Carrick at Old Trafford.

talkSPORT understands United are set to sack their current under-pressure manager.

Dressing room insiders expect Carrick to leave the club following Sunday's 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth.

The setback followed a humiliating loss to Como in the Champions League last week.

talkSPORT subsequently revealed technical director Jason Wilcox was leaning towards appointing Howe if Carrick was sacked in the wake of that defeat.

Should Howe accept United job?

Gabby Agbonlahor has now urged Howe to only consider taking the job on one condition.

The talkSPORT co-host believes he should be appointed, but must only accept an offer if he is given all the power he wants.

Speaking to Andy Goldstein on Drive, Agbonlahor explained: "The problem we've got now is that he dropped Bruno Fernandes and look how bad they were still.

"I've seen Bruno Fernandes liking something on Instagram earlier where it was a little dig about loyalty.

"They know it is untenable now with Michael Carrick. He has to go, but if I'm Eddie Howe, what a position I'm in.

"You definitely have to take the job, but I'm saying I'm taking it. But you know what? I want the control that Unai Emery's got at Aston Villa. I want the whole package.

"I want promises that in January that I can buy this, this and this. These idiots that are in the squad, put them in the Under-10s, let them train with the kids.

"Give me everything I want and I'll take the job. If you don't get that Eddie Howe, stay clear of it."

Agbonlahor's comments come after Jeff Stelling urged Howe to steer clear of the job.

Meanwhile, Carrick's imminent departure comes after he dropped Bruno Fernandes for the visit of Bournemouth.

The Red Devils captain was an unused substitute against the Cherries.

It was a move which followed Fernandes' criticism of the tactics in the defeat to Como.

As for Howe, he is currently without a club after leaving Newcastle in July.

The 48-year-old spent almost five years in charge at St. James' Park.

During that time, he twice qualified for the Champions League as well as winning the Carabao Cup.

That triumph ended the club's 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy.
