ESPN's Rex Ryan calls Raiders RB 'worst draft pick of last 20 years'

Las Vegas Raiders star Ashton Jeanty is 'soft as Charmin' and 'the worst draft pick [at running back] in the last 20 years,' according to former New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan.

Speaking Sunday on ESPN, the 63-year-old NFL analyst blasted Jeanty for directing some trash talk at the beleaguered Jets defense ahead of Sunday's game at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium.

New York was coming off last week's demoralizing loss to the last-place Miami Dolphins when Jeanty predicted his Raiders would have success running the football against the Jets this Sunday: 'Couple of guys out there that don't really want to tackle, but I'm not going to say names.'

While many fans of the 2-5 Jets may agree with Jeanty's assessment, the team's former coach did not.

Instead, Ryan ripped the former first-round pick for what he sees as a disappointing start to the running back's career.

'I'm going right up to him [before the game] and I say, 'I heard what you said, and I want you to know something, alright,' Ryan said on Sunday NFL Countdown. 'We are not gonna try to take you out of the game. I want him to know that we are not gonna try to take him out of the game. Why? Because you are horrible. You're about the worst draft pick in the last 20 years, I think, as a running back. You stink.'

Ryan wasn't finished.

'You're averaging 3.1 yards per carry. Guess what? Today, you get your ass kicked.

'It's on you, my friend.'

Jeanty has struggled in his second season out of Boise State. The former Heisman Trophy candidate disappointed as a rookie, averaging just 3.7 yards a carry while. But he's been even worse this season. Not only was he averaging 3.1 ypc under first-year head coach Klint Kubiak entering Sunday, but he scored only one rushing touchdown over the season's first seven games.

Ryan has openly lobbied to return to the Jets as the team's head coach, but also has another reason to be loyal to the team: His son Seth is currently New York's passing game coordinator.

Even for long-suffering Jets fans, last week's 28-25 loss to the miserable Dolphins felt like a new low.

Winless entering the game at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium, the Dolphins held off the Jets' comeback effort in the fourth quarter after outscoring New York 21-7 in the first half as home fans repeatedly booed their team's performance.

Jets quarterback Geno Smith wasn't terrible, completing 23 of 30 passes for 287 yards and three touchdowns. And while he did toss an interception, the Dolphins failed to capitalize on the turnover. Truthfully, Jets offensive coordinator Frank Reich's unit was decent, gaining 108 yards on the ground on just 21 carries, while allowing young targets like Omar Cooper Jr and Mason Taylor to combine for 10 catches, 177 yards and three touchdowns.

The problem, as Jets fans are all too aware, was on defense, where head coach Aaron Glenn and coordinator Brian Duker failed to come up with any answers on Sunday. Miami gained 156 yards on the ground, won the possession battle by ten minutes, and even allowed up-and-down quarterback Malik Willis to toss for two scores.

Miami was a perfect 3 for 3 on fourth down, which helped to seal the Dolphins' first victory of the season. But the worst moment may have come at the end of the first half, when New York allowed Willis to scramble in for a touchdown with six seconds left in the second quarter. Glenn had timeouts but effectively denied his team a final possession in the first half by not using them.

'It's just a matter of when, not if, they fire the coach,' ESPN host and long-time Jets fan Mike Greenberg wrote on X. 'They absolutely should.'
