Aidan's heartbroken mum described football as her son's life while paying tribute to him. She wrote: "Thanks Airdrie FC for remembering my beautiful boy.

"He played many a game at the stadium over the years. There's no words to describe the shock and grief. Football was his life, he was a 6 feet 7 inches centre back and was the fittest boy ever. It is just so unfair. Football was his life. I appreciate everyone's lovely words for my gorgeous boy."

His dad Graeme said: "Our hearts are broken and we miss our boy so much". He added: "We are all absolutely heartbroken but this wonderful gesture gives me heart in how much my boy was loved throughout the game."

Friends and family also paid their respects to Aidan, with many taking to social media to describe him as "kind and fantastic". David Nairn said: "Truly heartbreaking news. Anyone who had the pleasure of meeting Aidan will know how kind he was.

"You couldn't speak more highly of an individual. A fantastic human being who will be missed dearly."

Anne Fleming commented: "Nobody should bury a child. Thoughts are with Aidan's loved ones. Sleep tight". Lauren McWilliams added: "The sweetest, most kindest boy ever. The world is definitely a more sadder and darker place without him."
