Don't count out Lincoln Riley just yet!
USC put Ohio State in danger of falling out of the College Football Playoff picture before November even arrived — and it pushed the Buckeyes out of the Top 10, too.
The Trojans downed the Buckeyes in the LA Coliseum in what many thought could be Riley's swan song. Ohio State couldn't slow down quarterback Jayden Maiava and receiver Trent Mosley and the Trojans enough on Saturday night in a 30-18 victory.
Ryan Day's team slipped out of our rankings and Miami became our new No. 1 after the Hurricanes survived a thriller in Chapel Hill.
Meanwhile, Texas Tech outlasted Arizona in the Big 12's big game on Saturday; Indiana and BYU — both in our top 10 — barely won; and Georgia blew out Florida in the SEC.
But Ohio State's loss is a resounding one throughout the sport as quarterback Luke Fahey replaced the injured Julian Sayin. Matt Patricia's defense didn't show and the Trojans walked away big winners.
Let's get to the Top 10!
This week: beat North Carolina 38-35
Next week: at Notre Dame
The Hurricanes needed a sack-fumble and then a touchdown from, of course, Malachi Toney to secure the victory in a tight game. The Tar Heels led midway through the fourth quarter before Miami's nine-play, 75-yard touchdown drive and then the big turnover that led to Toney's score — his second touchdown of the day.
This week: beat Minnesota 23-16 OT
Next week: Off
It took a 60-yard game-tying field goal, a backup quarterback and two clutch catches from receiver Charlie Becker for the Hoosiers to survive a scare at home from the Gophers. Reserve QB Grant Wilson — a seventh-year senior (!!) — entered for injured Josh Hoover to pass for 156 yards. He hit Becker for two of his nine completions on the field goal drive to push it to overtime and on the eventual game-winner in the extra period.
This week: beat Nevada 27-0
Next week: at Minnesota
The Bruins didn't need much from QB Ty Dieffenbach considering their resounding defensive performance. The Wolf Pack had 176 yards of total offense. In the last five games, no team has cracked the 15-point mark against coordinator Colin Hitschler's defense. His group is now allowing less than 270 yards a game. That's a recipe for a playoff berth.
This week: beat Florida 27-8
Next week: vs. Oklahoma
If you worried about the Bulldogs after their loss to Auburn, don't worry any longer. Kirby Smart's team showed why it just might be the SEC's best chance to end the league's three-year skid in the national championship race. QB Gunner Stockton rebounded from that turnover-plagued outing against Auburn two weeks ago by carving through the Gators in Atlanta.
This week: Off
Next week: at Tennessee
Coach Will Stein and the Wildcats get a much-needed week off before one of the biggest games in school history in Knoxville. This game seems like a loser-is-out-of-the-playoff matchup. QB Kenny Minchey against UT's salty defense is the matchup to watch. He hasn't thrown an interception since the loss to Alabama in Week 2.
This week: beat Cincinnati 49-25
Next week: vs. BYU
QB Devon Dampier had another electric day on the ground and through the air, accounting for more than 300 yards and three passing touchdowns as the Utes extended the nation's long win streak at a whopping 14 games. That's the longest streak since Utah won 16 consecutive games from 2007-2009.
This week: beat Navy 35-13
Next week: vs. Miami
The Irish involved Jerome Bettis Jr. more in the offense on Saturday and that paid off. The son of the Hall of Fame running back caught six passes for 78 yards and finished off the scoring with a 31-yard touchdown catch from CJ Carr. Notre Dame led by just one point, 14-13, at halftime before roaring to life in a second half that included a 23-yard score from Nolan James Jr.
This week: beat Arizona State 27-20
Next week: at Utah
Entering the fourth quarter all tied up, the Cougars needed nine-play and 11-play scoring drives to break the 17-all score and rebound from last week's stunning loss at UCF. BYU managed just 47 yards rushing but QB Bear Bachmeier threw for 236 yards and found six different receivers.
This week: beat Virginia 51-7
Next week: Off
Perhaps the hottest power conference coach this cycle got another big win. Jake Dickert, in Year 2 in Winston-Salem, has the Demon Deacons 7-1 and barreling toward and ACC championship game appearance. Former UNC QB Gio Lopez threw for 229 and ran for 64 in the beatdown of the Cavaliers.
This week: beat Mississippi State 31-3
Next week: at Missouri
The debate over Arch Manning will continue onward, but there's no argument about whether the Texas defense is good or not. The Longhorns suffocated Mississippi State, winning a second consecutive game after dropping two in a stunning slide that sent them tumbling out of our Top 10. Welcome back, Horns!
