For the first time in six games, the Carolina Hurricanes took a regulation loss – and in doing so, ended the franchise-leading winning-streak of goaltender Pyotr Kochetkov (10) in their 4-1 loss to the Nashville Predators.
Overall, it was one of the more flat games the Hurricanes have played this season, with a sloppiness with puck management.
The first period of the game saw just one goal as Nick Perbix found the back of the net with a wrist shot.
In the second period, Roman Josi scored in under three and a half minutes with a snapshot. But, Jackson Blake got one back with a beautiful backhander, assisted by both Shayne Gostisbehere and Logan Stankoven.
Nonetheless, that was the only goal of the night for the Hurricanes. In the third period, Adam Edstrom got a goal with a tip-in on Roman Josi’s shot to extend the lead to 3-1. Then, with Kochetkov on the bench, Ross Colton put the game to bed with the empty net goal – ironically assisted by former Hurricanes Brady Skjei and Jack Drury.
Interestingly, all goals were even-strength – save for the empty-net goal – with both teams being perfect on the penalty kill, and ironically, both going two-for-two.
For the two-game road trip, Taylor Hall joined the team. While he didn’t play in Tuesday’s game, he may hop into the lineup for Thursday’s game against the New York Islanders.
Nikolaj Ehlers’ six-game point streak (and Andrei Svechnikov’s two-game roughing penalty streak) both ended in Tuesday’s loss to the Predators.
Kochetkov’s historic 10-game winning-streak came to an end, but on the bright side, he has the franchise record for most consecutive wins by a goaltender, while remaining tied in second place (with Carey Price) for longest season-opening winning streak by a goaltender in NHL history.
