On Tuesday, the Giallorossi surrendered a two-goal lead against an ailing Red Devils side at Old Trafford. A soft penalty decision and individual mistakes from Roma allowed Man Utd to taste victory for the first time in almost two months.
Naturally, the mood at the Serie A club was tense after the match, and it wasn't because they were playing a wounded animal like Man Utd. The frustration instead stemmed from the fact that it wasn't a one-off.
Last month, the same thing had already happened at home against Real Madrid. Roma stormed into a 3-1 lead, only to end up losing 4-3. Because of Gian Piero Gasperini's intense style, the Italians are vulnerable to running out of steam in the second half of matches.
These two results have hammered home what Roma already knew when the transfer window closed: they lack quality depth. They attempted to rectify this in the summer, but landing their top targets proved difficult. Gasperini desperately wanted a new winger, but didn't get one.
Roma will look to belatedly address the situation in January. After all, there is still everything to play for in both Serie A and the Champions League. Domestically, they are currently four points behind surprise league leaders - and hated rivals - Lazio.
With the Friedkins having put Everton up for sale, their full focus is on Roma as the club enters a new era after receiving approval for their stadium project, which is slated to be completed in 2030.
Gazzetta dello Sport notes that Roma "won't hold back" when it comes to aggressively pursuing their January targets in order to provide Gasperini with the tools to oversee a successful season.
Several players they had already targeted in the summer remain on their radar, chiefly Chelsea winger Jamie Gittens, Real Madrid attacker Endrick and Stuttgart star Jamie Leweling. Additionally, Frosinone sensation Giorgi Kvernadze - the "new Khvicha Kvaratskhelia - has become an option.
Predictably, after a disappointing first season at Stamford Bridge, Gittens is once again struggling. He started the season as a benchwarmer at Chelsea, being an unused substitute in five consecutive games, and he has been sidelined since October with an ankle problem.
His only appearances under Xabi Alonso have come in the Carabao Cup, where he failed to directly contribute to a goal. He was hooked at half-time against Leeds in September, and Chelsea proceeded to put six past their opponents after his substitution.
Gittens was an inconsistent performer during his time at Borussia Dortmund, so it is no surprise that it hasn't worked out for him in the Premier League. His Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) has plummeted from a peak of €74.6m to just €34.5m.
Nevertheless, he is a "popular" figure at Roma, who believe in his potential. The Serie A side made several attempts to bring him in during the summer window, but they failed to strike a deal with Chelsea, who were reluctant to allow the winger to leave after just one season.
Heading into January, it could be a different story. With the 22-year-old clearly not in Alonso's plans, and fresh off an injury, a departure might be in everyone's best interest.
