Caldy run Richmond close after second half comeback

It was a fast but tight game in the capital with Harry Hocking going over for Richmond on three minutes after a successful lineout.

Caldy started to play well after this but had to bide their time trying to break down the Richmond backline until Seb Kelly was able to break through to score and make it 7-5 to Richmond on the quarter hour mark.

The rest of the half was dominated by the home side who scored four more tries before the break.

The first came from Jared Cardew on 16 minutes after some good offloads down the wing.

Cardew was in again moments later to extend the home side's lead to 16 points at the midway point of the first half.

Paddy Case ran in another try for Richmond on the half hour to the delight of the majority of the crowd who could sense a big win was on the cards.

Richmond's final try of the half came on 31 minutes when Callum Grieve made the most of a gap in the Caldy defence to go under the posts.

Caldy had something to cheer on the stroke of half time as Ollie Hearn scored a fantastic try off the maul.

Caldy started the second half with more purpose and Monty Weatherby benefited from some great play from Caldy and poor defending from Richmond to crash over five minutes after the restart.

With their tails up Caldy continued to attack, after great work from fly half Charlie Attis allowed Charlie Hyde in to score. With more than a quarter of the match remaining Richmond were on the ropes and fearing a comeback.

Caldy carried on pushing going into the final few minutes and after Richmond's Alex Burrage was sent to the sin bin Matt Gallagher spotted a gap that allowed him in to bring the score within one converted try.

Despite the extra man Caldy were unable to break down the Londoners' defence to grab an unexpected but deserved victory for the second half performance with the final score 35-29.

Things don’t get easier for Caldy as they face promotion hopefuls Coventry at home next Saturday. Kick off at 1pm.
