Bayern Munich CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen was understandably disappointed that his team could not secure all three points in Saturday’s Klassiker, but he also acknowledged that Dortmund made life difficult for the Bundesliga leaders, particularly during the first half.
Dreesen was keen to give Dortmund credit for creating several excellent opportunities before the break, while also pointing to the three injuries Bayern suffered during the match as an additional challenge. With Ismael Saibari, Serge Gnabry, and Michael Oliseall experiencing injury problems, Bayern now face an anxious wait to discover the extent of the damage ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League meeting with Atlético Madrid.
However, Dreesen also recognized that the result has potentially added another layer of intrigue to the Bundesliga titlerace. With Bayern and Dortmund now level on points at the top of the table, the prospect of a genuine championship battle is becoming increasingly realistic.
”Obviously we would’ve liked to win. We need to be fair and say that Dortmund had some excellent chances in the first half. And with our three injuries, which I can’t say much about the severity yet, we were given an additional test. Nobody can complain that the Bundesliga isn’t entertaining. We saw a real fight in Der Klassiker today like we’ve not seen for a long time. We’re now tied on points together at the top. Why can’t there now be an exciting title race? I personally would prefer things to be boring, but that probably won’t be the case,“ said Dreesen (as captured by FCBayern.com).
That last comment should make Bayern supporters smile. Dreesen might prefer another comfortable title-winning campaign, but Dortmund have made it clear that they intend to challenge.
Bayern remain firmly in the driver’s seat in terms of their ambitions, but the Klassiker suggests this Bundesliga season could have plenty of twists and turns left.
