Premier League side Brentford have confirmed they are working with police to identify those responsible for apparently kicking a rugby ball from the top of a nearby building and onto the field of play during a match.

The incident unfolded during Brentford's 2-1 defeat to Liverpool at the Gtech Community Stadium, with a video going viral online.

In the clip, a man can be seen volleying the rugby ball from a balcony overlooking the stadium, with the match still going on below.

The ball landed on the field of play and, in a separate clip, a man can be seen carrying the ball away from the pitch alongside the caption "Wrong sport mate".

Brentford have now confirmed they have reported the incident to police and an investigation is now under way.

'Dangerous and potentially very harmful'

A statement from the club released on Monday read: "Brentford Football Club is aware of an incident involving an item being kicked from a height towards the field of play during Saturday’s match against Liverpool.

"Such behaviour is dangerous and potentially very harmful.

"The matter has been referred to the police and the club is supporting the relevant authorities in their investigation to help identify those responsible and take appropriate action, which may result in criminal prosecution.

"The matchday safety of fans, staff, players and officials is of utmost importance, and the club will support all efforts to ensure action is taken."

Liverpool won the match 2-1 courtesy of goals from Victor Munoz and Alexander Isak.

The Reds now sit just one place above the Bees in fifth, having taken three wins and four draws from their opening seven games.

They continue their league campaign at home to Brighton this weekend, while Brentford travel to Hull City.
