Lexus Wrexham Open proves to be an ace event once more

The second staging of the event at the Wrexham Tennis and Padel Centre drew in the crowds once more and there was another home winner.

Seventeen-year-old Hannah Klugman became the latest British winner of this tournament, following in the footsteps of Mimi Xu last year, while Sonay Kartal was the 2024 champion when the event was played in Shrewsbury ahead of moving to Wrexham.

Reflecting on the week, tournament promoter Dave Courteen said: “It’s been a fantastic week of tennis, and we’re delighted with the crowds that have been in to watch the world class tennis on view.

“Aside from the Lexus Wrexham Open, the highlight has been the One Point Grand, which saw a young British winner.

“The improvements that we’ve made this year have been well received by players and spectators alike and we’re grateful for the support of the Welsh Government that enabled this to happen.

“We’re also really proud that the Lexus Wrexham Open took place in the week when Wrexham were shortlisted for the City of Culture 2029 bid and hope that what we’ve delivered with this event has helped strengthen the bid process.”

Klugman claimed the biggest title of her career so far with a straight sets victory over French player Elsa Jacquemot in Sunday’s final.

Klugman, who did not drop a set throughout the week, produced another excellent performance to win 6-2 6-4 in front of a capacity crowd of 720 at the centre’s Carden Park Arena.

At the start of the week, rising British star Daniella Britton became the Wrexham Open’s first One Point Grand champion after winning an exciting event that saw professional tennis players challenged by amateurs in one-point matches.

Inspired by the success of the Australian Open’s Million Dollar One Point Slam, the Wrexham equivalent, which involved 16 professionals and 16 amateur qualifiers, was a huge success when it was held for the first time.

Britton beat Eliz Maloney in the final to win £1,000 and a trip to Melbourne where she will have a wild card to play in January’s Million Dollar One Point Slam. Continuing the British success stories, Freya Christie and Eden Silva triumphed 6-2 6-3 against fourth seeds Hiroko Kuwata and Ankita Raina to win the doubles.
