AUCKLAND, New Zealand (AP) — India captain Shubman Gil won a delayed toss and decided to bowl Wednesday in the first of five one-day cricket internationals against New Zealand.

The toss was delayed by 20 minutes by a passing shower at Eden Park, and Gil said it would be better to bat second in the event of any later reduction in overs.

Gil is one of the superstars who are returning to India's lineup after bypassing the recent T20 series which India won 3-2. Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and K.L. Rahul are also back in action. Kohli will celebrate his 38th birthday on Thursday.

New Zealand has a number of players out with injury. Rachin Ravindra has a shoulder injury and Devon Conway is absent after a concussion in a training accident this week.

Tim Seifert was opening the batting with Will Young, with Henry Nicholls coming in at first drop.

Both teams went into the match with four pacers.
