‘The Organization Lucked Into 2 Franchise QBs’ — Dallas Radio Host Fears Cowboys Are Headed for Another ‘QB Purgatory’ Like Post-Troy Aikman Era

The Dallas Cowboys are making sure they’re sticking to the pattern established over the last thirty years by flattering to deceive all over again. The Cowboys were expected to finally get going in an NFC East up for grabs, but at 3-5, there are more questions than answers about the trajectory of the franchise.

While there have been calls for wholesale changes, from the head coach to the defensive coordinator to Dak Prescott, one radio host is warning against shipping Prescott out, believing it could launch the franchise into the wilderness, just like when Troy Aikman retired.

After a plethora of additions on the defensive side of the ball, alongside the offensive talent they already had, the hope was that the Cowboys would finally make some noise this year.

But at 3-5, their chances of a playoff spot are diminishing by the week. While the nature of the losses has been devastating, Zach Wolchuk of “105.3 The Fan” is firmly against the idea of moving on from Prescott.

“I lived the QB purgatory post-Aikman. It is why I defended Romo and Dak for so long. The organization lucked into two franchise QBs. There is a total unknown of how things will be whenever the time comes for change at the QB position.”

Following Aikman’s retirement in 2001, Dallas cycled through several starting quarterbacks, including Quincy Carter, Ryan Leaf, Clint Stoerner, Anthony Wright, Chad Hutchinson, Vinny Testaverde, Drew Henson and Drew Bledsoe, before Tony Romo established himself as the long-term starter in 2006.

Prescott was a fourth-round pick who was initially supposed to back up Romo before winning the job in 2016.

As a result, Wolchuk’s fear isn’t entirely unfounded, given the history of the Cowboys.

But he admitted that moving forward with the same roster and coaches would be the textbook definition of crazy, even though Prescott, ranked at number 12 in PFN’s Quarterback Impact Metric, has failed to live up to his end of the bargain.

“I completely understand the fans’ fear of the organization’s ability to find the next guy. Is that worth keeping the status quo? The owner and GM told us today it seems unlikely a coaching upgrade is on the horizon. Hard to find optimism as a Cowboys fan right now,” Wolchuk added.

It remains to be seen if the Cowboys can get themselves out of this mess in the coming weeks or even years. But for the time being, things look about as dire as they’ve ever looked for the franchise.
