Twenty-six years. That’s how long it’s been since your Vikings were 7-0 to start a season. With doubts swirling around the sustainability of their season and trade rumors abundant, the Vikings journeyed to the Motor City for a crucial NFC North matchup with the Lions.
Ultimately, Minnesota fell short and are no longer the league’s last undefeated squad following a 19-15 loss to the Lions.
The first half followed a familiar script: the Vikings' defense doing everything in their power to shut down a potent Lions offense. The offense struggled mightily to get anything going for much of the game, continuing a trend that could ultimately prove to be Minnesota’s undoing.
Here’s what mattered most coming out of the Vikings' first loss and heading into the NFL trade deadline.
The Vikings have spent their entire season searching for some form of offensive consistency.
Unfortunately, Sunday proved to be no different, even against a porous Detroit passing defense. Kyler Murray struggled with ball placement and accuracy throughout the game, with his first touchdown coming off an incredible effort by Justin Jefferson.

The star receiver’s fourth touchdown of the year doubled his season total from 2025. Murray ended the first half seven-for-15 for 86 yards with a TD and an interception. The third quarter was not much better for Murray and company, and Jefferson started to show hints of frustration with shrugs and head shakes.
Then, with just over 10 minutes left in the game, Murray threw an arching deep ball to Jordan Addison for a 51-yard gain, setting up a touchdown to T.J. Hockenson. Addison would then snag a two-point conversion catch in the back of the end zone.
The Vikings' defense came out swinging, with four first-half sacks and an interception to hold the high-flying Lions’ offense to only six points through two quarters.
Then, an eerily similar script started to unfold.
The second half echoed Week 18 of the 2024 season, when the Vikings had a chance to secure the number one seed in Detroit. The defense held the explosive Lions offense to only ten points in the first half, but a dud performance from Sam Darnold and the Vikings offense meant the defense was left on the field for a majority of the game, leading to an eventual break in the wall and a 31-9 loss.
Detroit ended Sunday’s game with 381 yards of offense after struggling against Flores’s unit in the first half. The Vikings' defense is simply too great to be wasted on an often incompetent offense.
If there’s one thing this game emphasized, it’s the need for the Vikings to improve their offense via trade.
While an update at the QB position may seem to be an impossible task in November, there may be a few names to check in on. The best way to get things on track? A game-changing running back. The Vikings finished with a total of only 81 rushing yards on the day, and 35 of those came from their QB.

Trade speculation around Colts running back Jonathan Taylor has dominated NFL rumors and discourse, and the Vikings are in desperate need of a home run hitter at the position. Hopefully, the close-up view of Jahmyr Gibbs gave Nolan Teasley the inspiration needed to find his star back.
