Commanders DC Daronte Jones describes Washington's defense in one word

How would you evaluate the Washington Commanders’ defense over their first six games?

Defensive coordinator Daronte Jones was asked that same question Thursday. "Inconsistent,” Jones replied succinctly. “I thought there were times we were looking explosive and getting the quarterback off of his spot. And then other times we’re not. Much like every aspect of the defensive performance.”

The Week 4 game against the Colts certainly illustrates how Jones feels. In the first half, the defense played together, getting to the ball carrier and the quarterback. It was a tight first half, with the Commanders trailing only 10-6. But in the second half, the defense offered little resistance. The Colts offensive line dominated the line of scrimmage, and the Commanders were outscored 20-7 in the second half, 30-13 overall.

Then the Giants game made the problem even worse. The Commanders’ defense had gotten after Jameis Winston in the first half. Early in the third quarter, the Commanders led 27-13. Suddenly, James Winston played like he confused his identity with Dan Marino’s. The Giants stormed back, tying the Commanders 27-27. The defense then allowed a long Giants overtime drive but forced a Cam Skatteboo fumble, giving the Commanders one final chance.

Jones spoke briefly about evaluating each aspect of the team during the bye week. The first-year NFL defensive coordinator said he could see the defense needs to function better as a unit. Guys can’t be out there thinking about who is in the game or what the Commanders quarterback news is.

“We’re focusing on us and our consistency and our execution in playing as one unit. Yes, in terms of no individual rushes or individual efforts. More team collective type of deals, where we’re all working as one.” Indeed, Jones’ defense needs to work together better, in the scheme of things, to help the defense meet its weekly objectives.

Philadelphia won the first matchup in 2025 in Washington, and then the Commanders won the finale in Philadelphia on the season’s last weekend. To open this season, the Eagles won 24-22, and now the Commanders have the Eagles on Sunday Night Football on their home turf.
