Rankings shock as two players climb to the No.1 spot

South Africa beanpole Marco Jansen has continued his rapid rise by becoming the No. 1 ranked Test bowler and all-rounder, while Abhishek Sharma reclaimed his title as the best batter in T20Is in a big week of changes to the ICC Men's Player Rankings.

Jansen earns the top billing in two categories for the first time in his career on the back of a standout performance for the Proteas during their comprehensive victory over Australia in the second ICC World Test Championship contest in Gqeberha, with the left-armer contributing 85 runs with the bat and a match-turning five-wicket haul during the visitors' first innings.

Abhishek's rise back to the top was arguably more expected, with the India left-hander reclaiming his spot at the top for T20I batters following his quickfire century against New Zealand in Wellington in the third game of their series on Tuesday.

Abhishek was in fine form as he reached his century in just 35 balls and finished with 113 from 38 deliveries as India cruised to a series-clinching six-wicket triumph.

The innings was enough to see the left-hander displace teammate Ishan Kishan and move back into the No.1 spot for T20I batters.

Kishan had taken the premier position from Abhishek in July this year following some decent efforts in Ireland, with Abhishek first ascending to the No.1 spot back in July of 2025 when he overtook Australia's Travis Head.

There are plenty of other big movers following the latest update to the rankings, with South Africa captain Temba Bavuma also making ground as he jumps four spots to second overall on the list for Test batters following his Player of the Match exploits against the Aussies in the second Test.

Bavuma hit a sensational 179 in the first innings as the Proteas levelled the three-match series at 1-1.

England captain Harry Brook is now the only player ahead of the South Africa skipper in the rankings for Test batters.

Australia pacer Scott Boland (up three rungs to sixth) is among the movers on the list for Test bowlers, while South Africa spinner Simon Harmer (up 15 spots to eighth) is among the big improvers on the rankings for Test all-rounders, which is now headed by teammate Jansen.

It's not just Abhishek who ascends the T20I rankings this week, with teammate Sanju Samson (up six spots to 20th) and New Zealand power hitter Finn Allen (up three rungs to 25th) making gains on the list for T20I batters.

Mitchell Santner (up seven slots to seventh) and Arshdeep Singh (up six places to 15th) are among the biggest movers for T20I bowlers.

There are also some changes in the ODI rankings as the tri-series continues between hosts Pakistan, England and Sri Lanka, with Ben Duckett and Brook among the improvers on the list for ODI batters.

Pakistan pacer Shaheen Afridi (up two spots to sixth), Afghanistan seamer Azmatullah Omarzai (up 13 places to seventh) and experienced Namibia spinner Bernard Scholtz (up nine slots to eighth) all make ground inside the top 10 on the updated rankings for ODI bowlers, while veteran Mohammad Nabi jumps five spots to third on the list for ODI all-rounders.
