Alessia Russo scored a header five minutes from time to save a point for Arsenal, after Villa took the lead in the first half through Chasity Grant.
Slegers felt Arsenal were suffering from a sense of deja vu with how they continued to start games.
“It feels like we're playing the same game over and over again. We go one goal down from a break, and we don't start with enough urgency.
“I don't think our ball speed was high enough, or our energy on the pitch was good enough. We didn't win enough duels. Those are the basics that let us down today.
She also put the lack of composure down to the pressure of needing to find that late goal, which stemmed back to the need to start games with more urgency and intensity.
“We know that Aston Villa have threats in their forward players, but mostly it's about how we set ourselves up. We don't start well enough, and then we end up having to chase the game again in the second half. That's when we show our urgency and resilience to score the goal.
“Alessia scored a good goal, but I also think the pressure of having to score can lead to less composure in the box. So, a lot of things come back to how we start games. We need to start with more urgency and intensity.”
Slegers also stressed the need to show more energy overall, both herself, and the team.
“ I think it's about energy in general. How do you present yourself? That includes me. How do I present myself on matchday, in the warm-up and at the start of the game? It's about every individual, but also about us as a team.
It's general energy: body language, communication, both verbal and non-verbal, connecting with each other, and carrying out your actions with full intent and conviction.”
“I don't think that was good enough today. For me, it's about both attacking and defending. If you bring energy on both sides of the ball, you should set yourselves up well.”
