Game of the Week: Cheney Cardinals vs. Andale Indians

ANDALE, Kan. (KSNW) — Cheney and Andale are set for another chapter in their rivalry this Friday night as the Cardinals visit the Indians in the regional playoffs.

The two teams met in Week 5, when Andale came away with a 34-25 victory, but Cheney's offense will look very different this time around.

Quarterback Holden Ferralez suffered an injury a couple of weeks ago, forcing wide receiver Sam Johnson to take over under center.

The Cardinals have learned more heavily on the ground game, and it's translated to three straight victories since they suffered their second loss of the season.

Cheney is hoping that adjustment continues to pay off this week.

"Something needed to change. We started running the ball more, and that has obviously seemed to work. And we've been winning again and have been pretty happy with our performances. Obviously, nothing's ever going to be perfect, but we're working to get that way," said senior Cheney middle linebacker Colton Young.

Head coach Shelby Wehrman said the team needed some time to adjust after Ferralez's injury, but he believes the Cardinals are becoming more comfortable with their new identity.

"It took a little bit of adjustment. Caught us by surprise, you know, the week after. I think that the guys have adjusted well, and we're just, the excitement's building and we're getting more confidence. We're getting more used to the run game, and it's kind of exciting to think about the possibilities," Wehrman said.

On the other side, Andale has been dominant throughout the regular season, finishing with a perfect 9-0 record.

The Indians' closest game came against Cheney, winning by just nine points.

Head coach Dylan Schmidt believes that matchup provided valuable perspective heading into Friday's rematch.

"You gain some perspective. You know just how good they are, and I think our kids, you know, playing four quarters in that game and being a game that we're really tested in, kind of have a better understanding of kind of how we measure up," Schmidt said.

Andale senior running back Hudson Ungles said the Indians have also made adjustments after seeing what Cheney brings to the table.

"We've adjusted our defense and made a couple plays off of what they showed us in Week 5 or 6. We've just been preparing for them since we played them the first time," Ungles said.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday.
