Bayern Munich faced Borussia Dortmund and drew 2-2 at the Allianz Arena. The match brought bad news, with Bayern losing two players within the first half hour. Serge Gnabry and Ismael Saibari were both injured during the game, joining a long list of sidelined players. Later, Michael Olise also exited early, causing further concern.
While having a large injury list is not necessarily a new problem for Bayern or club football in general, there is heightened anxiety regarding Bayern’s specific situation. Currently, the Bavarians have five out of their seven starting attackers injured. This is particularly worrying because those seven attackers cover just four positions.
With fans calling for new signings in the January transfer window, CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen was asked whether the club might finally add players rather than assuming they are invincible to injuries.
Dreesen responded by stating that it was too early for that discussion, citing players like Luis Diaz, Jamal Musiala, and Michael Olise, whose recovery timelines remain uncertain.
“Lucho will be out for four to six weeks. He is making good progress and has resumed running training,” the CEO said, per Sky Sport and @iMiaSanMia. “Jamal will return. We also need to see what exactly is going on with Olise; it’s difficult to say at this stage. I think we shouldn’t rush into discussing these kinds of topics.”
Naturally, fans are unlikely to take this well. Bayern soon face Atlético Madrid and several other tough opponents in both domestic and European competitions, alongside the ongoing risk of players picking up injuries on international duty. It may not be far-fetched for Bayern to consider reinforcing the full-back, defensive midfield, and wing positions, rather than continually assuming a full squad will be available outside of rare exceptions like this one.
