Championship rugby league player served drug ban during 2026 season as UKAD make statement

Following the news of Leigh Leopards’ Owen Trout yesterday, it has been revealed that a second rugby league player served a suspension during the 2026 season for a positive drug test.

Trout was confirmed to have been banned for a month during the season after a positive drug sample found carboxy-THC, a Metabolite of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive compound found in cannabis, in his system.

The Leigh man confirmed that he ingested the illegal substance in an Out-Of-Competition setting. He also completed a Substance of Abuse treatment programme, which reduced his suspension to just one month.

Now, a second player has been revealed to have landed the same ban, with Goole Vikings’ Shane Tuohey also banned for a month during the year.

Tuohey, a former Leeds Rhinos reserve player, admitted to smoking cannabis on March 28, one day before a mandatory drug test.

With his ingestion also coming in out of competition hours, UK Anti-Doping subsequently charged Tuohey with the same charge as Trout, with the 21-year-old also completing a Substance of Abuse treatment programme.

The Goole man’s ban came into place on May 14 2026 and ended on June 13 2026. He did not feature for the Vikings for the remainder of the season, but has agreed a deal with the Championship club for 2027.

The RFL and UKAD’s full statement on the matter can be viewed here.
