Lakelanders swimmers win six golds at junior gala

The event, held at Omagh Leisure Centre on Sunday, October 25, was the club’s first home gala of the new season and provided an important opportunity for its younger swimmers to put their training into practice.

A total of 40 Lakelanders swimmers took part, joining competitors from 13 other Ulster clubs for a busy day of racing.

For many of the eight to 14-year-old competitors, it was among their first experiences of individual competition, marking an important milestone in their swimming development.

Swim Ireland referee Lars Behme oversaw the event, which attracted 279 swimmers and 1,027 entries across the various races.

More than 30 parents and older swimmers from the Lakelanders club volunteered throughout the day, helping ensure the gala ran smoothly.

The event proved a success both in and out of the pool, raising much-needed funds for the club while allowing swimmers to test themselves against competitors from across Ulster.

There were plenty of reasons for the host club to celebrate, with six gold medals, 11 silver medals and a strong collection of bronze medals secured across the individual events.

Mollie Kate Brewster claimed gold in the girls’ 50m backstroke, while Isla O’Donohue topped the podium in the 50m breaststroke and Maya McClintock won the 50m butterfly.

James McSorley enjoyed an outstanding day in the boys’ events, taking gold in both the 100m freestyle and 100m breaststroke.

Eoghan Donnelly completed the gold-medal haul with victory in the boys’ 50m backstroke.

The Lakelanders also enjoyed considerable success in the silver-medal races.

Brewster added three silver medals to her collection, finishing second in the 50m butterfly, 100m breaststroke and 100m freestyle.

Tara Collins secured silver in the 100m individual medley, while McClintock claimed second place in both the 50m freestyle and 50m backstroke.

Lauren Loizides also earned silver in the 50m backstroke.

In the boys’ events, Charlie Brewster and Charlie Crawford both won silver in the 50m breaststroke.

McSorley added two more medals to his impressive tally, taking silver in the 50m butterfly and 100m individual medley.

Bronze medals followed across a range of events, underlining the depth of the Lakelanders’ performances.

McClintock and Elin O’Donohue both finished third in the girls’ 50m breaststroke, while Isla O’Donohue claimed bronze in the 50m freestyle.

Collins added two bronze medals in the 50m breaststroke and 50m freestyle, with Loizides also taking third place in the 50m butterfly and 100m breaststroke.

The boys enjoyed further podium finishes, with Crawford earning bronze in both the 50m backstroke and 50m freestyle.

Conor Collins collected bronze medals in the 50m breaststroke and 50m freestyle, while Donnelly finished third in the 50m butterfly.

Ollie Elliott completed the boys’ bronze-medal performances with third place in both the 50m and 100m freestyle.

Away from the racing, club public relations officer Janette Mongan praised the volunteers, supporters and sponsors whose contributions helped make the event possible.

She highlighted the efforts of club members and paid particular tribute to gala secretary Aideen Speer for her considerable work in organising the competition.

Thanks were also extended to staff at Omagh Leisure Centre for facilitating the event, while local businesses were acknowledged for their generous sponsorship.

The supporting businesses were EVChargers Ireland, R2 Motor Repairs, Encirc, Thomas Hanna & Co, Farmcare Products, Balcas, Cassidy Oils, Hair Square, Severfield, Ardhowen Bay, Western Cars and Lough Erne Resort.

Parents also played an important role by sourcing and donating raffle prizes and contributing to the gala café.

Mongan also praised head coach Fionna Orr and coaches Chelsey Weir and Liam Campbell for their work with the swimmers.

The coaching team helped ensure the gala offered a competitive environment while remaining an enjoyable and valuable learning experience for those taking part.

With the Autumn Junior Gala providing plenty of encouragement for the season ahead, many of the young swimmers will now turn their attention to the Swim Ulster Primary Schools Championships.

The competition takes place in Bangor at the end of November, where the Lakelanders swimmers will hope to build on their performances in Omagh as they prepare to represent their respective schools.
