The Indian Premier League (IPL) is likely to retain the Impact Player rule for the 2027 season despite criticism from several players. According to a report by Hindustan Times, franchises have already built their squad plans and auction strategies around the existing regulation and want it to continue for another year.

The upcoming IPL edition will be the final before the next mega-auction cycle. Notably, the mini-auction is scheduled to take place on December 16 in Goa, while franchises must submit their final retention and release lists by November 17. The franchises can trade players from other teams before the deadline.

IPL Likely to Retain Impact Player Rule for 2027 After Franchise Feedback

According to Hindustan Times, franchises have based their ongoing trade discussions and preparations for the December 16 mini-auction on the understanding that the rule will remain in place. At least four teams told the IPL that withdrawing it at this stage would significantly affect their plans.

An IPL official told Hindustan Times: "The next edition will be the last before a mega auction cycle and a rule change now would be too late for the teams. It's unlikely there would be any change. At least four teams had informed IPL that withdrawal of the rule this late would hamper their strategy significantly."

The BCCI trialled the rule in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy during the 2022-23 season before introducing it in IPL 2023. The rule allows each team to name a playing XI and five substitutes, with one substitute eligible to replace a player at the start of an innings, at the end of an over, after a wicket falls or when a batter retires hurt.

The IPL Governing Council retained the provision for the 2025-27 cycle in September 2024. Sunrisers Hyderabad have built an aggressive batting line-up with additional batting depth through the Impact Player option.

Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Other India Stars Raise Concerns Over Impact Player Rule

The Impact Player rule has faced criticism from several prominent players, particularly over its effect on genuine all-rounders. Former India captain Rohit Sharma said he was "not a big fan" of the regulation, while Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel and Shubman Gill have also questioned it.

Players such as Shivam Dube, Naman Dhir and Suryansh Shedge need regular bowling opportunities in the IPL to improve their skills. However, captains often prefer an additional specialist bowler or batter instead of giving an all-rounder a chance to contribute in both departments.

The pressure to produce results, particularly on flat pitches and grounds with small boundaries, also leaves little room for experimentation. Captains are more likely to use the extra specialist option than risk giving developing all-rounders more responsibility.

Impact Player Rule Allows Injured Stars to Feature and Boosts IPL Viewership

Despite concerns about the balance between bat and ball, the regulation has also allowed injured players to contribute during matches. Rohit Sharma, for example, missed five games in IPL 2026 because of a hamstring injury before returning as an Impact Player and featuring as a batter.

The possibility of MS Dhoni returning for Chennai Super Kings as an Impact Player also generated considerable interest throughout the 2026 season, despite his injury concerns. The rule has also helped increase the number of high-scoring contests, which can benefit the tournament's television viewership.

While players and coaches continue to question its impact on the development of all-rounders and bowling standards, the commercial appeal of bigger scores remains an important consideration for the organisers.

The increase in high-scoring matches is reflected in the numbers. Across the first 15 IPL seasons, up to 2022, teams recorded 133 totals of 200 or more. Since the rule's introduction in 2023, that figure has increased to 195 across four editions.
