Moyes would ‘jump’ at Celtic job, claims former ally

Mick Brown’s striking verdict fuels the Moyes debate, but Celtic supporters need clarity on what comes next.

David Moyes would “jump” at the Celtic job if the opportunity arose, according to former West Ham scout Mick Brown.

That is a claim guaranteed to stir debate among supporters. However, the crucial detail is who is speaking: Brown is offering his assessment, rather than announcing a decision from the Everton manager.

The Daily Record reports Brown’s comments to Football Insider, where he outlined why a return to Scotland could appeal to his former colleague.

Moyes Celtic claim sparks fresh debate

Brown worked alongside Moyes at West Ham. He believes the manager’s playing connection with Celtic and family ties in Scotland could make Parkhead an attractive destination.

“He would jump at the chance to go back to Scotland,” Brown told Football Insider.

Yet his enthusiasm came with a significant qualification. Brown also acknowledged that much would need to happen before Moyes leaving Everton became a realistic prospect.

According to the report, Moyes’ contract expires at the end of the season. Martin O’Neill’s initial Celtic agreement also runs for one year, creating an obvious talking point about what follows.

Still, matching contract dates do not establish that either manager will leave. Nor do Brown’s remarks demonstrate that Celtic have approached Moyes.

Celtic need more than a familiar name

For me, the interesting question is what a Moyes appointment would actually offer Celtic.

Experience would be an obvious attraction. He has managed under intense scrutiny and understands the demands placed on a major football club.

However, Celtic supporters would be entitled to ask about his football, his recruitment plans and his ambitions in Europe. A recognisable name should begin that discussion, rather than settle it.

Would he build a side capable of controlling domestic matches while competing more effectively against stronger European opposition? What backing would he require to deliver that?

Those are serious questions for any potential successor.

O’Neill deserves clarity over Celtic’s future

There is another consideration: Celtic already have a manager.

O’Neill’s work should be judged on performances and results. Speculation about next season cannot become a substitute for assessing what happens on the pitch now.

Equally, Celtic should plan properly for the future. Supporters deserve a clear direction, whoever occupies the dugout.

Brown has supplied an eye-catching claim, and Moyes’ Celtic connection makes it easy to understand the interest.

But the next meaningful development must come from the people making the decisions. Until then, this remains a fascinating possibility built around a former colleague’s opinion.
