Commanders HC Dan Quinn loved Jayden Daniels' leadership in Week 8 win

Enough was enough; something needed to be said about it right then.

On Sunday night, the Washington Commanders picked up some pre-snap penalties early. Quarterback Jayden Daniels missed a couple of early throws to open receivers. Treylon Burks dropped what would have been a first down. Chig Okonkwo fumbled a first down to the Eagles, setting up their only touchdown.

Sure enough, the Eagles, already up 3-0 and getting to start at the Washington 26, were all Daniels could take. He gathered offensive players on the sideline and voiced his frustration and refusal to accept the offense’s play up to that point, after their first three possessions.

Head coach Dan Quinn was asked Monday during his press conference what he thought of Daniels speaking out on the sidelines at that point in Sunday night’s game. “Yeah, for any of the players, Jayden or any of the leaders here, to be honest, I love that.”

Quinn, like any other coach, would love to have player leaders raise the bar for his teammates.

“There comes a point when enough is enough,” Quinn said. “This is not a game plan specific that can be all the way tricked out; that’s hard to do. So, for him and his teammates, to look one another in the eye and say, ‘Okay, let’s get this part of our football in order. And let’s do this now.' It’s usually more effective that way. So the fact that it didn’t have to be me, the one doing that, I thought was good.”

It reminded me of Joe Theismann from years ago. He was always taking on the bench, on the field, always trying to lead, whether it was by rebuking (as in this case) or encouraging and praising others, as Theismann was often observed doing.

“Obviously, frustration and all of that builds up, so I like it when that happens,” concluded Quinn. Each team needs players who will step up and say to each other what needs to be said. It was good to see Daniels step up, risk being unliked or resented, yet be willing to lead and demand they meet a higher standard of performance together.

Washington upon being down 10-0, went on to score 13 consecutive points in the second quarter for a 13-10 halftime lead. They continued into the second half with 14 unanswered points, finishing 27-10.
