Man United And Chelsea Eye £8m Defender: Should They Challenge Madrid?

Manchester United Transfer News: Manchester United’s defensive problems have become difficult to ignore in the 2026/27 campaign. Michael Carrick’s side sit 17th after nine Premier League matches, with seven points and one league victory. A solitary clean sheet across 12 games has left the backline under sustained pressure, while an eight-match winless run has deepened the concern.

Chelsea, by contrast, occupy the Champions League places under Xabi Alonso. Their defensive structure has looked more settled, with Levi Colwill and Wesley Fofana forming key options at centre-back. Maxence Lacroix arrived in the summer to add depth, so Stamford Bridge does not face the same immediate shortage as Old Trafford.

Both clubs, however, continue looking for young defenders who can play for their teams for years. United have Leny Yoro, Lisandro Martínez and Harry Maguire in their senior group, although Maguire’s contract runs only until 2027 and his £190,000 weekly wage poses a considerable commitment. Yoro is contracted until 2029 on around £115,000 per week, while Chelsea’s Colwill and Fofana earn reported salaries of £100,000 and £200,000 respectively.

That search has brought Jacobo Ramon into the picture. CaughtOffside, citing Football Insider, reports that United and Chelsea are tracking the 21-year-old Spanish centre-back ahead of next summer. Ramon has developed impressively at Como under Cesc Fabregas since leaving Real Madrid in 2025, showing composure on the ball, strong passing and defensive awareness.

His numbers underline the progress. Across 10 Serie A appearances this season, Ramon has scored twice, completed 92 per cent of his passes and made 68 clearances. In three Champions League outings, he has registered 96 per cent passing accuracy, one assist and a goal against United in Como’s 4-1 win.

Real Madrid hold the decisive advantage. The Spanish club reportedly inserted a buy-back clause worth around £7.6 million when selling Ramon to Como, allowing them to bring him back next summer. Madrid are prepared to activate it if his progress continues, leaving English suitors dependent on the club’s decision.

Manchester United Transfer News: Should Manchester United and Chelsea challenge Real Madrid for Ramon?

Neither should throw money at Como to defeat a clause they cannot control. An inflated £25–34 million offer would make little sense if Madrid can reclaim Ramon for roughly £7.6 million, and Como would have limited reason to accept an outside bid while that option remains available.

Chelsea could see Ramon as a natural fit for Alonso’s possession-based, high-line approach, where distribution from the back matters. United need defensive help, but placing a developing centre-back into a side short of confidence and protection could hinder his progress.

Both clubs should keep in contact with Ramon’s camp and monitor Madrid’s intentions. If the Bernabeu declines its option, they can move; otherwise, United and Chelsea would be better served spending that money on defensive targets they can actually sign.
