Vikings’ decision not to put Kyler Murray on IR was awfully convenient to everyone

Glorified journeyman Carson Wentz will officially be the Minnesota Vikings quarterback when they host the Buffalo Bills on Monday night. But the way the Vikings traced a path to playing Wentz over a seemingly injured Kyler Murray doesn't pass the sniff test.

You see, Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell first claimed that Murray tweaked his hamstring during a loss to the Detroit Lions last Sunday. But, rather curiously, the Vikings let him finish the game with one of the trickiest and most finicky injuries imaginable for a modern athlete. How does that make sense? Now, with Wentz taking over under center, O'Connell maintains the Vikings won't put Murray on short-term injured reserve.

What? Something doesn't add up.

Let's do a normal process of elimination. Murray pulled his hamstring, yet he was healthy enough to finish a tight fourth-quarter game against a bitter NFC North rival. Now, he won't be healthy enough to play with only eight days' rest? OK, I guess that makes sense. Full recovery from lower-grade strains, which Murray presumably has, usually takes about a month. So, rightttttt. I'm sorry: Why wouldn't the Vikings put him on injured reserve?

The math ain't mathing, dearest readers.

After how Minnesota handled J.J. McCarthy last season, this whole process sure seems like a "soft benching" of a similarly struggling Murray with the Vikings, for whatever reason, refusing to make it public. NFL fans agreed that O'Connell and the Vikings are refusing to admit that Murray isn't actually all that hurt.

And that his new hamstring issue is just a means to bench one of the NFL's worst quarterbacks so far this season.

That last post makes a good point, particularly about Murray's official "week-to-week" status. If Wentz also struggles against the Bills, it wouldn't be surprising to see Murray healthy right away and playing the following game. If Wentz plays well, Murray may probably remain sidelined. It, of course, won't mean Murray was definitely soft-benched, but the optics will look pretty bad if Wentz plays poorly, too, and Murray is magically ready to go.

I suppose we'll know some semblance of the truth soon enough.
