The Los Angeles Rams are on the verge of adding a two-time Defensive Player of the Year to their defense, and not via trade. Myles Garrett has been on injured reserve since Week 2 but Sean McVay announced on Monday that the star edge rusher will return to practice this week.
McVay stopped short of saying Garrett will play against the Washington Commanders on Sunday afternoon, but he isn't ruling it out, either. On Tuesday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network shared an update on Garrett and said that once he gets on the field, "it should all happen quick."
He added that "this week is in play" for Sunday's game but the Rams will need to see how Garrett responds to the week of practice.
“Myles Garrett is an interesting one," Rapoport said. "I thought he was coming back last week. Just didn't get to a point where he could feel comfortable enough on the knee, so it was like, all right, don't rush it, stretch run, be ready this week. What I don't know – I was told when he gets on the field for practice that it should all happen quick, so I think this week is in play, but we need to see how he actually responds. I think it's finally, after like two months, in a pretty good place."
Garrett underwent surgery days after the Rams' season-opening loss to the San Francisco 49ers, which landed him on IR. He's missed the last seven games while rehabbing his knee but a return is certainly on the horizon.
Once the Rams start Garrett's practice clock on Wednesday, they will have 21 days to decide whether to activate him off IR. Obviously, they plan to do so, which is a sign that they believe he's close to being back at full strength and ready to play.
