India completed their highest-ever successful run chase in T20I cricket on October 22 at Hagley Oval in Christchurch, securing a four-wicket victory against New Zealand. Chasing a target of 226, India reached 230 for six in 19.4 overs, surpassing their previous best chase of 209 against Australia in Visakhapatnam in 2023. The win gave India a 1-0 lead in the five-match T20I series.
Openers Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma provided an electrifying start, adding 93 runs inside the powerplay. Samson top-scored with 60 off 33 balls, while Abhishek departed for 29 off 12 balls. However, India's momentum stalled dramatically as they slumped to 122 for four after spinners Mitchell Santner and Michael Bracewell bowled in tandem during the middle overs, threatening to derail the chase entirely.
Dinesh Karthik praised the tactical intervention that helped India recover from that collapse. He highlighted the importance of Axar Patel's brief but impactful contribution during the critical phase of the innings, crediting head coach Gautam Gambhir's decision to promote the left-hander.
"Axar Patel's numbers, that 24 off 14. It probably looks smaller in stature some of the 40-plus scores, but I think that was the most crucial part of the innings, because those 2 spinners were actually taking the game away from India. At that stage, Axar Patel came in, played a few shots, and put the pressure even away from Shreyas Iyer. So, credit to Gautam Gambhir for slotting that little phase where he thought that a left-hander would be useful," Karthik said on Cricbuzz.
Axar Patel made 24 off 14 balls after being promoted in the batting order, a decision that proved decisive in shifting momentum back towards India. Shreyas Iyer contributed 42 runs, while Naman Dhir remained unbeaten on 42 to seal the chase. Karthik elaborated on how Axar's approach and execution complemented the situation perfectly.
"Axar Patel came in with no sort of confusion, went and played the shots that he is great at. I think that was very important," Karthik said.
Karthik also reflected on India's overall performance in executing the chase under challenging circumstances. The team had travelled across continents and time zones before facing New Zealand in Christchurch, yet adapted swiftly to the conditions and demands of a high-scoring encounter.
"I think it is India's skill wherein they have just come a few continents away from a different time zone, adapted so quickly, and in a high-scoring chase, got the job done. I thought it would be a lot harder than what they showed today. That just tells you the extreme and impressive skill levels that this current Indian team has," Karthik said.
India's successful chase demonstrated their ability to recover from middle-order pressure and execute under demanding conditions. The victory marked a significant milestone in T20I cricket history for the Indian team, establishing a new benchmark for run-chases in the format.
