Wigan will host a 2km stretch of the men’s race in 2027, with the route passing through Orrell and Billinge during Stage 2 of the competition.
The announcement was made on October 22 in Paris, where organisers revealed that the opening stages of the 114th edition of the Tour would take place in the UK.
Councillor Nazia Rehman, leader of Wigan Council, said: "We’re super excited that one of the biggest sporting events in the world, the famous Tour de France, will be coming to Wigan Borough.
"Although the whole region will play a big part in the Tour de France Femme, we will be the only borough in Greater Manchester to host next year’s men’s race – so we know people from far and wide will be coming to catch a glimpse of some of the world’s best athletes."
The race will enter Wigan from West Lancashire along Sandbrook Road and Up Holland Road, before turning onto Crank Road and continuing towards Merseyside.

It will be the first time in 13 years that the Grand Départ has been held in the UK.
The 2014 event in Yorkshire drew crowds of 4.8 million people over three days and delivered an estimated economic impact of £128 million for host areas.
Of that, £24.3 million benefited the accommodation sector.
Cllr Rehman said: "We saw truly incredible scenes when Tour de France came to Yorkshire back in 2014 for what’s still widely regarded as the greatest Grand Départ of all time.
"It was a massive boost for the local economy and created a real legacy for cycling in local communities.
"Next summer’s race is a huge opportunity, and the eyes of the world will be on us.
"So, we’ll be doing everything we can to showcase what our borough is all about and to make our 2km the very best 2km of all."
The Tour de France is broadcast in 190 countries, reaching a global audience of 3.5 billion viewers.
It is the world’s largest annual sporting event and the third-most watched overall, behind only the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games.

Wigan Council has already begun preparations to capitalise on the international spotlight.
Cllr Rehman said: "Preparations have already begun and we’ll be working with our local businesses, schools, colleges and the wider community to make the most of this amazing opportunity and have a day we’ll never forget."
The Tour’s official social impact programme, JOY, will include cultural activities, and a focus on increasing cycling participation among girls.
There will also be a digital programme for schools to promote physical activity.
Cllr Rehman said: "While we’re looking forward to a festival atmosphere and a real community celebration on the day itself, we’re also excited about the legacy the Tour de France can help us build here in Wigan Borough for years to come."
