Chennai Super Kings (CSK) could consider a major squad shake-up ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 auction, with former India opener Krishnamachari Srikkanth suggesting that the franchise should pursue Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya in a potential trade involving Shivam Dube.
With both five-time champions looking to recover from disappointing IPL 2026 campaigns, discussions surrounding possible player movements have intensified ahead of the upcoming mini-auction. Srikkanth believes Pandya’s all-round abilities could address an important requirement for CSK, even if it means parting ways with Dube.
Srikkanth, the former India captain and chief selector, believes Pandya could be an excellent addition to CSK because of his ability to contribute with both bat and ball.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Srikkanth highlighted the value Pandya could bring to Chennai’s combination.
“It’ll be good for both Hardik and MI. Under him, they struggled with team formation and performance. Hardik Pandya will be a great inclusion for CSK because the all-rounder slot will be sealed,” Srikkanth said.
The former opener also suggested that SCK should not hesitate to release Dube if doing so improves their chances of acquiring MI skipper.
“Shivam Dube, I would even give for free if I were CSK. I don’t even need a trade to give Dube up. If I were CSK, I would definitely put him back in the auction and get him again if needed,” Srikkanth added.
His comments have added another dimension to the growing speculation surrounding Pandya’s future ahead of IPL 2027.
Hardik offers a combination of middle-order batting, fast bowling and leadership experience that few Indian all-rounders can match. His ability to accelerate the scoring rate and contribute with the ball gives a team greater flexibility when selecting its playing XI.
The all-rounder has also experienced success with multiple franchises. He played a key role in MI’s title-winning campaigns before leading Gujarat Titans (GT) to the IPL championship in their debut season in 2022. Gujarat also reached the final in 2023 under his leadership.
Pandya returned to MIahead of the 2024 season and took over the captaincy from Rohit Sharma. However, Mumbai’s inconsistent results in subsequent campaigns have raised questions about the team’s direction and future combination.
For CSK, acquiring Pandya could provide a proven Indian pace-bowling all-rounder and another experienced leader. His arrival could strengthen the middle order while giving the captain more options when managing bowling resources.
Nevertheless, convincing MI to trade their captain would be a significant challenge, particularly because Pandya remains an experienced international player.
Dube has developed into an important middle-order batter for CSK. The left-hander is particularly effective against spin and has the power to clear the boundary consistently, making him a valuable option during the middle overs.
His ability to attack spin bowling has helped the Super Kings maintain momentum when opposition teams attempt to slow down the scoring rate. Dube also offers a left-handed batting option in a lineup that needs a balance of power and flexibility.
Despite these strengths, Srikkanth believes Chennai should prioritise acquiring Pandya because of the additional dimensions he could bring to the side.
A potential trade would involve a difficult decision for CSK. Dube provides a specialist power-hitting role, while Pandya offers a broader all-round package. The value of such a move would ultimately depend on Chennai’s squad requirements, available alternatives and the terms of any agreement.
MI would also need to evaluate the potential consequences before considering such a move. Losing Pandya would mean giving up their captain and an experienced all-rounder, while acquiring Dube would strengthen their middle-order batting and provide another option against spin.
However, a direct exchange would not necessarily address every requirement for either franchise. Mumbai would have to consider its leadership plans, bowling balance and the availability of suitable replacements before making a decision.
For now, Srikkanth’s suggestion remains a talking point rather than an official development. Any trade would require agreement between the franchises and compliance with IPL regulations.
