Edendork and Clonduff keen to grasp Ulster chance

Edendork scaled their Mount Everest by winning a first ever Tyrone SFC title in a final replay against Errigal Ciaran.

Now they have the chance to make even more history as they enter the Ulster club championship for the first time.

First up for the O'Neill Cup winners is a preliminary round tie against Down champions Clonduff at Pairc Esler on Saturday (18:15 GMT).

A Friday night win meant that Brian McGuckin's side got to enjoy a "Saturday club" as well as the traditional "Monday club" celebrations for their historic triumph, but all eyes now are on making a splash in a new competition that they did not envisage they would be playing in this year.

"Ulster wasn't in our mind at all, our sole focus was Tyrone, but now we've accomplished winning the Tyrone championship we see Ulster as a great way for us to go out and express ourselves and who knows where we can end up," McGuckin told BBC Sport NI.

"We're confident in our ability and we hope we can give a good account of ourselves."

In order to overcome Clonduff, who themselves have not featured in Ulster for over two decades, Edendork will need to rely on their Tyrone inter-county cohort.

The likes of Niall Morgan, who kicked the winning two-point free in the final, Darren McCurry and Conn Kilpatrick have excelled for club this year and McGuckin hopes they can carry their form into Saturday's opener.

"They've been there and done it and they've been massive for us all year, but we've a lot of experience in our team," McGuckin added.

"Clonduff are a fabulous team, I've watched the Down final and they're very impressive.

"They're a big, strong, physical team, they like to play direct football, but they're very sharp up front.

"We'll have our work cut out, but we'll be well prepared."

As mentioned, Clonduff are back in Ulster for the first time in a long time; twenty six years to be exact.

They saw off Burren in the decider to claim the Frank O'Hare Cup and while they, like Edendork, enjoyed their celebrations, they were straight back to training the Wednesday after their Sunday final win to start Ulster preparations according to coach Mark Poland.

He wants his side to quickly shelve that final victory and look ahead as to how they can progress in Ulster.

"Twenty six years is a long time for the boys, but in Clonduff they're very lucky they have a good age profile of mature boys who were back at it Wednesday after the county final," he said.

"They've wanted to play in this competition for as long as they've been playing, so it was a very easy task at hand to get the feet back on the ground.

"They can do their celebrating around the table at Christmas. We're really looking forward to the championship, it's new territory for them and really excited for what will come."

Clonduff have had the luxury of longer preparation time for the the game and there is also the Pairc Esler factor.

They have won their last four games at the Newry venue which Poland hopes is a "good omen" as they prepare for a tough test against an Edendork team brimming with talent.

"I'm sure they're flying on the crest of the wave too, winning their first championship, and they have household names throughout their team, boys who have played at the highest level," Poland continued.

"I'd say they are coming in with confidence, so we'll be under no illusions as to what these boys will bring.

"We can't take our eye off the ball and we won't take our eye off the ball in any way. It's the one thing we've focused on all year, how we perform and bringing our A game to the table."
