Arsenal and Bayern Munich played out a 2-2 draw in the Champions League, with both sides showing flashes of quality but also exposing some weaknesses that could prove costly against elite opposition. From Arsenal’s perspective, there were several tactical concerns worth examining, particularly in how the Gunners tried to create chances and protect themselves against Bayern’s transitions.

Here are four observations from the perspective of Max Mallow, Editorial Manager for Soccer Team Communities at SB Nation and a noted Arsenal fan, after Wednesday’s showdown.

“Arsenal lacked creativity out wide”

BFW Analysis: Bukayo Saka’s injury disrupted Arsenal’s attacking rhythm. Saka is not simply a winger who can beat his marker; he is a player who connects the attack, creates opportunities, and forces opponents to adjust their defensive shape. Without him, Arsenal lacked some of the unpredictability and individual quality needed to consistently trouble Bayern Munich’s defense (which featured two struggling outside-backs).

Arsenal still had possession, but controlling the ball is not the same as creating genuine danger. The Gunners needed more incisiveness from their wide players, particularly when Bayern were organized defensively.

“Arsenal’s full-backs were too far out of position to stop counterattacks after turnovers”

BFW Analysis: Arsenal’s aggressive positioning at full-back can be a major strength, allowing the team to establish territorial dominance and overload opponents in the attacking third. However, that approach becomes a liability when possession is lost in midfield.

Against FC Bayern, the full-backs were sometimes too far up the pitch to recover quickly and provide defensive cover. That left space for Bayern Munich to exploit on the counterattack, forcing Arsenal’s defenders to deal with dangerous situations while retreating toward their own goal.

The worrying part for Arsenal is that Bayern Munich posed a considerable threat even without Michael Olise in the starting lineup. If the Bavarians could exploit those spaces without one of their most creative attackers, Arsenal will need to improve before facing similarly dangerous opponents.

“Arsenal lacked a genuine focal point in the final third”

BFW Analysis: Kai Havertz offers plenty of useful qualities, including intelligent movement, technical ability, and an impressive range of passing that allows him to pick out teammates with longer balls. However, he is not a traditional target-man striker who can consistently occupy central defenders, provide a reliable outlet under pressure, and turn difficult deliveries into scoring opportunities.

Viktor Gyökeres, meanwhile, did not provide the creativity or link-up play needed to help Arsenal break Bayern down consistently. Arsenal needs its center-forwards to offer more than finishing or physical presence. Against a defense of Bayern Munich’s caliber, the ability to connect midfield with attack and manufacture opportunities when space is limited is essential.

“Martin Ødegaard continues to drop too deep”

BFW Analysis: Ødegaard’s tendency to retreat into deeper positions has become a recurring feature of Arsenal’s performances. While dropping back can help him influence buildup and dictate possession, it can also create a tactical problem: when the captain movesaway from the final third, Arsenal loses a key creative presence between the lines.

Against Bayern Munich, Ødegaard still demonstrated enough quality to rank among Arsenal’s best performers. His technical ability and understanding of the game remain valuable, but Arsenal must find a better balance between allowing him to orchestrate possession and ensuring he is positioned to hurt opponents in dangerous areas.

Ultimately, the draw showed that Arsenal can compete with Bayern Munich, but it also highlighted some familiar weaknesses. The Gunners need greater creativity from their wingers, better protection against counterattacks, a more effective central attacking presence, and a way to keep Ødegaard involved in the areas where he can do the most damage.

Those adjustments could make the difference between earning a respectable draw against an elite opponent and taking the next step toward winning Europe’s biggest prize.t an elite opponent and taking the next step toward winning Europe’s biggest prize.
