Caroline Wozniacki is a Danish tennis player and a former world No 1. She won her only Grand Slam title at the 2018 Australian Open, after spending most of the previous decade as the best player without a major, and has not played on the tour since the 2024 US Open.
She is the most successful Danish player in history, with 30 WTA singles titles, the 2017 WTA Finals among them, and 71 weeks at the top of the rankings.
Because of Alexander Zverev. On November 2, 2026, the German became world No 1 for the first time, a few months after winning his first Grand Slam title at Roland-Garros, at his fourth attempt in a major final. For years, he had carried the same label as Wozniacki: the best player never to have won a major.
Wozniacki’s path was similar. She reached No 1 in October 2010 and finished 2010 and 2011 at the top of the rankings without a major title, which fuelled a long debate about “Slamless” No 1s. She lost her first two Grand Slam finals, at the 2009 and 2014 US Opens, before winning the 2018 Australian Open in her third, which also took her back to No 1.
Zverev’s rise to the top has also come with questions about whether it was earned in the absence of injured rivals. The Rolex Paris Masters answered them in its own way, saying there is “no such thing as No 1 by default”.
Unlike Wozniacki, Zverev reached No 1 with two majors to his name, after adding the US Open title in September.
Yes, one. She won the 2018 Australian Open, beating Simona Halep 7-6 (2), 3-6, 6-4 in the final. Both players were chasing their first major title, and the winner was also guaranteed the world No 1 ranking.
She had lost her two previous Grand Slam finals at the US Open: in 2009 to Kim Clijsters, who won as a wildcard, 7-5, 6-3, and in 2014 to Serena Williams, 6-3, 6-3.
Yes, for a total of 71 weeks. She first reached the top in October 2010, finished the 2010 and 2011 seasons as No 1 and returned there in January 2018 after her Australian Open title.
She won 30 WTA singles titles, including the 2017 WTA Finals in Singapore.
She has not played a match since the 2024 US Open, where Beatriz Haddad Maia beat her in the fourth round. In April 2025, she announced she was expecting her third child, and her son Max was born on July 26, 2025.
She has not announced a second retirement.
After retiring at the 2020 Australian Open, Wozniacki announced her return in June 2023. She came back in Montreal in August 2023, then reached the fourth round of the US Open, where eventual champion Coco Gauff beat her.
In 2024, she reached the quarter-finals in Indian Wells after winning a battle of mothers against Angelique Kerber, before retiring injured against Iga Swiatek. At Wimbledon, she won her first match there since 2018 and reached the third round.
She also played her fourth Olympics in Paris in 2024, having carried Denmark’s flag at the opening ceremony in Rio in 2016.
Wozniacki played her last match before her first retirement at the 2020 Australian Open, to tributes from Federer, Djokovic and Nadal. She had been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis in 2018 and married former NBA player David Lee in 2019.
“I’ve accomplished everything I could ever dream of on the court,” she wrote on Instagram. “In recent months, I’ve realized that there is a lot more in life that I’d like to accomplish off the court.”
Yes. She spoke publicly about the diagnosis in 2018, a few weeks after winning the China Open. “Some days you wake up and you can’t get out of bed and you just have to know that’s how it is, but other days you live and you’re fine,” she told the BBC.
Before her return to the US Open in 2023, she said she was confident she could manage the condition. “It’s something that I’m dealing with on a daily basis,” she said.
Wozniacki is married to David Lee, a former NBA All-Star who played for the New York Knicks and the Golden State Warriors, among others. They got engaged in November 2017 and married in June 2019.
They have three children: Olivia, born in June 2021, James, born in October 2022, and Max, born in July 2025. Wozniacki was previously engaged to golfer Rory McIlroy, until their split in May 2014.
Caroline Wozniacki was born on July 11, 1990, in Odense, Denmark. She is 36. Her current ranking and career prize money are on her WTA profile.
Her compatriot Clara Tauson is now the leading Danish player on the WTA Tour.
Serena Williams, who was her bridesmaid, is one of her closest friends. Angelique Kerber and the Radwanska sisters, Agnieszka and Urszula, also attended her wedding. She is on Instagram as carowozniacki.
