With two seconds remaining in the first half, NC State lined up for a long field goal that it hoped could get it within 18 points of Duke.
Instead, the Wolfpack headed into halftime staring at an even bigger deficit.
After Kanoah Vinesett's 50-yard field goal attempt was short for NC State, Duke's Andrew Pellicciotta caught the ball inches from the back line of the end zone and scampered all the way to the opposing end zone for a kick-six to extend the Blue Devils' lead to 28, 31-3.
Pellicciotta, a sophomore safety, initially shed a would-be tackler near the Duke 15-yard line before weaving through a group of offensive linemen unaccustomed to trying to make open field tackles. From there, right around midfield, he broke free and with a few more well-timed cuts, crossed the goal line.
In all, from the time Pellicciotta caught the ball to when he reached the end zone, the play took 20 seconds.
Pellicciotta had missed Duke's previous two games and was listed as probable on the ACC athlete availability report this week. The Malvern, Pennsylvania native has 33 tackles this season.
