The benefits of refereeing football at a young age

This article was written by one of our Young Reporters, a scheme that gives 14 to 18-year-old school students a chance to write for a real newspaper. Find out more at the Young Reporter website.

Though viewed as no.1 public enemy; refereeing, especially at a young age, can have its benefits.

From age 14, after completing the FA’s required training and 5 games you can become a qualified referee – which not only allows you to earn money but also builds so many important skills that can be used later in life.

Being the voice of reason in every game and making quick decisions under pressure helps a young person to develop skills of communication, confidence and responsibility which are transferable both on and off the pitch.

And as youth referee Amy Boother puts it “refereeing is a great way to involve yourself in the game and improve your confidence”

At a general rate of £20 to £45 a match at grassroots level, a teenager can be making money while also learning important skills and grasping greater concepts of a game they enjoy.

Going forward from refereeing as an u18, opportunities open up for a career in refereeing if it is pursued.

At the age of 16, you become eligible to apply for a promotion as a referee – allowing you to officiate at a level where the pressure, pay and importance of decisions is higher – upping the stakes to what may seem daunting; but can be more beneficial in developing core skills.

The confidence to step onto the pitch and have the final say in every decision may seem nerve racking at first, but over time the decisions begin to feel natural through experience.

Through ambition and consistency, a young person can gain so many experiences in skills that can aid them in their futures in a way that is both profitable and in most cases fun.
