How Kieran Tierney Has Absolutely Silenced His Celtic Doubters This Week

Kieran Tierney has delivered a convincing answer to questions about his Celtic fitness by completing back-to-back 90 minutes against Celta Vigo and Hibs.

Add his hour against Hearts the previous Sunday and that is 240 minutes across three matches in eight days.

For a player whose ability to finish games has attracted so much discussion, that deserves recognition.

There is plenty more in our latest Celtic news and transfers coverage.

There is something strange about the conversation around Tierney. His quality is obvious, yet the focus so often returns to when he might need to come off.

Some of those concerns have come from prominent pundits.

Speaking on The Scottish Football Social Club in September, Michael Stewart questioned whether Tierney could still bring the required intensity, asking: “Is he capable of having that intensity in his game doesn’t look like it.”

Chris Sutton also raised the issue while criticising Celtic’s cover at left-back, saying: “Your left-back Kieran Tierney can’t and doesn’t finish games.” His wider argument concerned the decision to sign Landon Emenalo while the youngster was injured.

Tierney’s latest appearances provide a pretty clear response.

He scored the opener in the 7-1 demolition of Hearts before making way for Emenalo on the hour, with Celtic already comfortably ahead. That was an opportunity to give the debutant minutes rather than a substitution that should automatically prompt concern about Tierney.

He then played the full match against Celta Vigo before doing the same in Sunday’s hard-fought victory at Easter Road.

Those were demanding assignments, with little recovery time between Thursday night and Sunday’s midday kick-off.

His injury history explains why questions are asked. It should also make this run of appearances encouraging for supporters.

Celtic will still need to manage his workload. Giving Emenalo opportunities makes sense, particularly when a match is already won.

But taking Tierney off occasionally should not become evidence that he cannot contribute regularly. Across these three games, he has given Martin O’Neill precisely the availability his critics questioned.
