Mario Chalmers played with LeBron James for four seasons in Miami. Although Chalmers had a front-row seat to the rise of James as an NBA champion, he doesn’t see the King as the greatest player of all time.
At a Got Sole event in Miami on Saturday, Chalmers was asked whether LBJ or Michael Jordan is the GOAT. The former Heat guard chose Jordan, saying that James wouldn’t be able to seize the GOAT title even if he won two titles with the Philadelphia 76ers.
Chalmers gave James his flowers while doubling down on his selection of Jordan as the greatest ever.
“He is his own GOAT. Certain people, they cannot be touched. That’s just what it is.”
Over the years, fans have vigorously debated the basketball GOAT, with Jordan and James becoming the most prominent names in the discussion. The number of NBA titles won (with MJ bagging six and James winning four to date) has been a key argument by fans who support Jordan’s GOAT claim.
Ironically, Chalmers was a key piece of the Heat’s rotation when they went on four consecutive finals trips from 2011 to 2014. Miami struck gold in 2012 and 2013, marking back-to-back championship runs for James after years of close calls with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
LBJ went on to win two more championships after that, and he is in a prime position to secure ring No. 5 if all goes according to plan for the Sixers this season. Chalmers, however, doesn’t see James’ GOAT stock rising even if Philadelphia reaches the summit.
As for another court general, no basketball player can claim to be superior to LeBron James.
At the XCEL Summit for Men in late October, two-time NBA champion Isiah Thomas pointed to James as the greatest player of all time.
“I say he’s No. 1 because, in sports competition, your No. 1 is the guy who leads in every category. He leads in points, rebounds, steals. … He’s across the board in the top five.”
Thomas, who has had a longtime, vitriolic rivalry with Michael Jordan, named Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as his No. 2 and said that he wasn’t sure if he could “get to three others” on his GOAT list.
