Losing to Tottenham at home is never good for any Chelsea manager. But the way Xabi Alonso set his team up on Saturday is leading to extra criticism for him.
Even TalkSport comedian and clip generated Jason Cundy got serious for a moment to criticise Alonso’s efforts.
“I came away from there yesterday, and I’m like, ‘I think there’s something there we should be concerned about’,” Cundy said.
“Why didn’t he change it? Why are we going man for man? Tactically — I can’t believe I’m going to say this — De Zerbi got it right, and I can’t believe Xabi Alonso didn’t change it. I’m still in shock.
“At half-time, that’s where you earn your money. So I’m thinking, he’s going to change it. Personnel or a tweak to the system, something has to change. Nothing changed.”
Cole Palmer has been criticised for his role in the defeat after he got a red card for two petulant acts.
The decision to use Morgan Rogers up top rather than Danny Welbeck also raised some eyebrows.
Chelsea’s overall setup was criticised as too “passive” in general as it allowed Tottenham to gain confidence in the game.
