‘Apologize to Luka (Dončić),’ ‘Should’ve Kept His Mouth Shut’ - NBA World Reacts to Yaxel Lendeborg’s 6-Point Game vs. Lakers

Yaxel Lendeborg’s feud with Luka Dončić has followed the Golden State Warriors rookie since opening night. Friday’s rematch with the Los Angeles Lakers was his first chance to back up his words. He finished with 6 points and five turnovers, and Dončić scored 37.

Jim Park was among the voices who weighed in during the game, and he tied the way Dončić came out to the feud. The criticism came on a night the Warriors still won, rallying from 25 points down to beat the Lakers 112-95 at Chase Center.

The Lakers led 38-15 after the first quarter. Lendeborg came into the night averaging 22.6 points and 9.2 rebounds. Against the Lakers, he shot 2-of-3 with one rebound and no assists in 24 minutes, and he finished a minus-20.

Dončić came in leading the league at 36 points per game after scoring 41 and 52 in his previous two appearances. He shot 12-of-27 from the field, including 6-of-16 from the 3-point range.

Jim Park posted while the game was still going, before Lendeborg had scored.

“This is a lesson learned for Yaxel. Don’t rile up superstar-caliber players, because I don’t think Luka would have come out like this if it weren’t for what happened between him and Yaxel.”

It was the teams’ first meeting since the October 21 opener in Los Angeles, a 127-105 Lakers win. Lendeborg started his NBA debut, spent much of that night guarding Dončić, and the two jawed late in the second quarter. Dončić pump-faked him into a shooting foul and let him know.

Later, Lendeborg was called for a technical foul while yelling at Dončić. Dončić banked in a half-court shot in the final seconds of the half, then pointed and laughed at the rookie. Dončić finished with 28 points to Lendeborg’s 12.

Lendeborg kept the dispute going at his postgame news conference that night: “I just watched highlights and seen him kill people. But being in it firsthand and seeing all the whining and complaining, I lost all respect.”

After the opener, Draymond Green, Lendeborg’s mentor in the locker room, had already waved off the idea that the rookie had a lesson to learn.

“Everybody will say, ‘Oh, the rookie learned his lesson.’ What’d he learn? The next time he see him, go at his [expletive] again.”

Podcast host Joel Moran posted less than a minute after Park.

“Luka Doncic is a killer. Welcome to the league Yaxel”

The CoolHandMe fan page made a suggestion for Lendeborg earlier in the game.

“If I’m Yaxel I apologize to Luka now. Maybe it will slow down the beating.”

Fan page BronGotGame posted later in the night and pointed to the other star in the building.

“It became the Luka v Steph game quick anyway, Yaxel can hide behind his vets tonight”

Cavaliers fan HoodiGarland also said, “Yaxel should’ve kept his mouth shut. Luka [expletive] one of them ones you can’t talk [expletive] to.”

The Warriors flipped the first-quarter score by winning the second quarter 38-15, and they outscored the Lakers 97-57 over the last three quarters. Stephen Curry finished with 31 points on 11-of-23 shooting, including eight 3-pointers. Golden State scored 27 points off the Lakers’ 22 turnovers, and the win evened the Warriors at 3-3.

Before the rematch, Warriors coach Steve Kerr laid out what he thought of the feud.

“I love it. I think the bravado, the not backing down, it’s great. … The way you back it up is to not getting lured into that [next time] when we play them again.”

Lendeborg did not draw a technical foul Friday. The Warriors had none as a team. Lendeborg still fouled out, finishing with six personal fouls.
