Manchester United are reportedly exploring a surprise move for a Premier League defender as they look to strengthen Michael Carrick's squad.
The Red Devils have endured a difficult period under Carrick, with pressure mounting on the manager and those above him at Old Trafford.
However, reports this week have suggested that United are prepared to back Carrick through their upcoming fixtures against Chelsea, Roma and Aston Villa, giving him an opportunity to turn things around ahead of the November international break.
Speaking ahead of the Chelsea clash, Carrick insisted that he does not require any reassurances about his position.
"I don't need any assurances from anyone. I totally get the position. I understand the job. I understand the responsibilities. I understand what comes with that. So, I really don't need any assurances from anyone in that regard."
Instead, the United boss is concentrating on finding solutions to his side's problems.
"To be honest, disappointment from the game, the result, initial disappointment. That's pretty clear, the way the game went and the result, dealing with that is the main thing," he said.
"What could we have done better, what could we improve on, what can we make the difference with, and then focusing on getting back to training with the players and preparing for the next game, for Chelsea, and a big week ahead, really. That's been my main focus, how can we make the difference?"
Carrick also delivered a positive injury update on Kobbie Mainoo, revealing that the midfielder is edging closer to a return.
"Good news, Kobbie done a little bit of training yesterday, so he's back in and around the group, so that's obviously a positive."
Carrick is not the only figure facing scrutiny at Old Trafford, with director of football Jason Wilcox also coming under increasing pressure.
The BBC reported this week that Sir Jim Ratcliffe is considering a major overhaul at United, raising further questions about the club's direction.
Wilcox has faced criticism over United's summer recruitment, notably from defender Lisandro Martinez.
Fans have been particularly frustrated by the failure to bring in another striker and a left-back, with injuries to Benjamin Sesko and Luke Shaw subsequently exposing weaknesses in the squad, but it appears the director of football is prepared to atone for his mistakes when the transfer window rolls around in 2027.
According to TEAMtalk journalist Graeme Bailey, Manchester United are exploring a surprise move for Fulham defender Calvin Bassey.
The Nigeria international has attracted interest from Newcastle United, but the Red Devils could now look to hijack the Magpies' pursuit.
Bassey's contract situation makes him a potentially affordable option, with his current deal expiring next summer.
Although Fulham have an option to extend his stay by a year, United still view the defender as a relatively inexpensive addition compared to other established Premier League targets.
The 26-year-old is comfortable operating at centre-back or left-back, and with Martinez expected to depart at the expiry of his own contract amid interest from Barcelona, a move for Bassey would replace the Argentine cheaply while adding depth behind Shaw.
Given the criticism already directed at Wilcox over the club's recruitment however, another relatively modest defensive addition might do little to silence those questioning United's transfer strategy.
