Chelsea Track £67m Midfielder: Is He Worth Signing Despite Palmer?
Chelsea

Chelsea have invested heavily in their squad under Xabi Alonso, yet the club still needs enough creativity to compete across several competitions. Cole Palmer remains central to their attacking plans, while Morgan Rogers offers another option behind the striker. However, Chelsea must consider their longer-term midfield depth as they prepare for future transfer windows.

Nico Paz has given European clubs plenty to consider during his time in Italy. The 21-year-old Argentina international possesses close control with sharp passing and an eye for goal, allowing him to create chances from central positions or the right side of attack.

His performances have strengthened Como’s ambitions under Cesc Fàbregas. Paz has registered four goals and five assists in 10 appearances across all competitions this season, including two goals and three assists in three Champions League matches. He also impressed during Como’s 4-1 victory over Manchester United on October 21, scoring twice and providing an assist.

Why are Chelsea monitoring Nico Paz?

According to Spanish newspaper AS, Chelsea are closely following the attacking midfielder ahead of next summer. However, any move would face a significant obstacle because Real Madrid hold a buy-back option worth approximately £67 million, valid during a limited window in July 2027.

Como paid around £50 million to secure Paz permanently in June 2026, while retaining him until at least 2028 under the reported contract terms. Fàbregas wants the Argentine to remain a central figure in his project, especially after Como’s impressive Champions League campaign.

Chelsea transfer news: Should Chelsea spend heavily on another creator?

Chelsea must decide whether Paz offers something different from Palmer before committing such a substantial fee. Both players prefer to receive the ball between the lines, operate in the right half-space and create openings with their left foot.

Paz could give Alonso another route through compact defences, particularly when Palmer needs rest or opponents restrict his influence. His ability to play as an attacking midfielder or second striker would provide tactical flexibility across a crowded schedule.

Still, Chelsea already have substantial resources in similar positions, so the recruitment team should prioritise a move only if Alonso identifies a clear role for the Argentine. Paying £67 million for another creator makes little sense without a plan for regular minutes, especially when Como have strong reasons to retain their leading attacking talent and Real Madrid can intervene first.
