'Five teams are too few' - BCCI eyes major Women's Premier League expansion

The Board will hold discussions on increasing WPL franchises from next year, with one or two additional teams under consideration to accommodate India's growing pool of domestic talent.

In Kochi on October 28, the Women's Premier League held its 2027 auction, where approximately 150 cricketers competed for spots across the five existing franchises. Only around 25 players secured contracts in the process, leaving a significant portion of India's domestic talent pool without representation in the league. This disparity has prompted the Board of Control for Cricket in India to consider structural changes to the competition from next year onwards.

Devajit Saikia, the BCCI official overseeing the WPL, has outlined the Board's expansion plans in response to the growing domestic talent base. The current five-team format, which has remained unchanged since the league's inception in 2023, cannot adequately accommodate the rising number of quality cricketers emerging from India's domestic system. Saikia emphasised that meaningful discussions will take place to address this capacity constraint.

"There are about 150 players in the fray and hardly 25-27 could be accommodated. Many talented players were left out. So, we can clearly see that five teams are too few compared to the growing pool of women cricketers." Saikia said as quoted by NDTV Sports.

Why does the BCCI want to expand the WPL?

Adding one or two franchises to the league structure, potentially combined with higher player budgets for existing teams, would create additional opportunities for cricketers to gain exposure and competitive experience at the franchise level. This expansion strategy aims to ensure that more talented players from India's domestic circuit receive the platform they deserve within the professional ecosystem.

The 2027 season is scheduled to run from January 14 to February 7, and Saikia has credited the WPL with playing a significant role in India's emergence as a dominant force in women's cricket. He pointed to the national team's ODI World Cup triumph last year as evidence of the league's positive impact on player development and performance at the international level.

"If you look at the journey over the last four years, we have come a long way. Today, India are among the dominant forces in women's cricket, and the WPL has contributed significantly to that success," Saikia said.

During the auction, Saikia welcomed the selection of 15-year-old uncapped all-rounder Uma Kashvi, who was picked by Delhi Capitals for Rs 10 lakh. The young player's inclusion in the league underscores the WPL's role in identifying and nurturing emerging talent from India's domestic cricket system, demonstrating the platform's value in developing the next generation of women cricketers.
