Jack Thomson praised Swindon Town's response to criticism

Three weeks ago, Swindon were struggling to pick up points and even score goals, as they went on a run of netting just once in five games, collecting one point in that time.

But things have changed over the last few weeks, with draws against Walsall and Bristol Rovers and victories over Barnet and Rotherham United seeing them move to just three points off the automatic promotion places.

Following the victory over Rotherham, in which Thomson netted his first Swindon goal, he praised the way that the team had bounced back after that rough period.

He said: "If you take the vast majority of the game, it was comfortable. We were really positive with our play.

"I think the character in the group is really top, because I think we've obviously come in for some criticism, and that's just part of it, and rightly so when you're not performing, you're going to get criticism. It's just part of it.

"But I think we've responded really well. We've always kind of backed ourselves, and we're starting to show that we can be a really good team.

"I think we're starting to build relationships in the middle of the pitch. I think the sticky period we had, so much of it comes down to having so many new players, and boys being in and out, never having a settled kind of lineup due to injuries, illnesses, whatever.

"But to have a settled structure, a set shape, players starting to build relationships with each other. I think you can see that.

"When I came in, I was so impressed with the quality within the squad, so I always knew we'd be fine.

"Not just today, but we felt like that the last few weeks. Obviously, the result at Barnet was really, really positive, and it probably gave us a lot of confidence, knowing that they're obviously one of the better teams, or have been one of the better teams in the league.

"To go there and win, now we know we can beat anyone. I think that confidence, it just goes through everyone, and it gives everyone a kind of lift. So I think you're kind of seeing that."

Thomson grabbed the opener against Rotherham with a deflected strike from 30 yards out.

That was his first goal since netting for Queen's Park in a 4-1 defeat to Dundee United in September 2023.

He said of his goal: "The position I play at the six, sometimes it's hard to get in those advanced positions because you're primarily focused on protecting the back line, protecting against counterattacks.

"It's definitely something I've been wanting to add to my game, not necessarily just goals, but contributing to goals, assists.

"I think I've got a good strike. So it just opened up for me, and I've hit it really well. Fortunately, it's taken a nick and went in."
