Hold on to your hats.
When Leicester City were reduced to 10-men, following the late sending-off of John Lundstram, the three points, on offer, appeared to be ours but the Foxes had other ideas, scoring a decent equaliser.
But a matter of minutes later I heard someone mutter;
“Only Luton Town can be 1-0 up, against 10-men, with minutes to go and not win.”
However, instead of accepting the draw, the Hatters pushed forward and minutes later, Jack Wilshere was on the pitch wildly celebrating the winning goal from Callum Marshall.
Who was it who said:
“Football can be a funny old game!”
The late winner gave the gaffer, Jack Wilshere, what he desired, back-to-back wins and, suddenly that light at the end of the tunnel is burning brighter.
After the game, and as reported by – Luton Today – Jack had this say about what the past week has been like, remarking:
“The players deserve it, as it’s been a long week. We were sat here after MK Dons and it was challenging. The boys were down, and rightly so, it was a game where we felt we should have got more out of, but then to bounce back like we did in the last two games, it’s credit to them and their belief.”
Yes, the loss at the Stadium MK was a shock and unexpected, but although the performances in the last two games have not been top-notch, getting two consecutive wins has been good for the soul.
Continuing, Jack added:
“I want the players and I want everyone to feel it as a big moment. Listen, we’re not getting carried away, we want to stay humble and stay consistent, but when you look up at the clock in the 88th minute and you’re playing against 10 men who have just scored, that’s tough, that’s tough. You’ve got a decision to make, you can go into your shell and just see the game out and get a point, but I didn’t feel like that.”
Exactly, I’ll readily admit that I half expected to see Leicester City go on and win the game.
But the Hatters showed a little bit of testicular fortitude that has been, at times, missing this season.
Talking about pushing for that late winner, Jack finished with:
“We had an opportunity before that where we put the ball across the front of goal and everyone was on the front foot, everyone knew we wanted more out of this game. We can review the game tactically and everything, but emotionally and desire and passion, everything we need to be successful in this league, it was there and credit to the players for that.”
The fact that Callum Marshall bundled the ball home with some part of his anatomy doesn’t matter one bit to me, like everyone else I just enjoyed the moment.
But it will all mean nothing if we can’t continue the momentum and get the three points on offer against Doncaster Rovers this Tuesday evening.
